The Star Trek Icons Who Wrote The Craziest Freddy VS Jason Script

By Chris Snellgrove | Updated

Back in the glory days of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga helped make that show and its spinoffs the predominant sci-fi of the ‘90s and beyond. Moore would later go on to create the excellent Battlestar Galactica reboot, but well before that, he and his fellow writer tried their hands at horror. Specifically, Moore and Braga wrote a draft for Freddy vs. Jason, and it somehow ended up being even more demented than the one that ended up in theaters.

The Courtroom Drama Of Freddy vs. Jason

One of the more surreal elements of these Star Trek icons’ screenplay was that it was very much a product of its time…specifically, it was influenced by the notorious trial of O.J. Simpson. In their Freddy vs. Jason script, Jason Voorhees gets apprehended by the police but doesn’t immediately begin tearing his captors apart. Instead, in an insane twist, he is put on trial and must defend himself for his constant camp-related murder sprees.

Freddy Killed Jason

After you process the utter insanity of putting an unspeaking monster man on trial, you’ll probably start wondering how these Star Trek writers included everyone’s favorite dream demon. In a retcon as wild as anything else in this Freddy vs. Jason script, we were going to find out that Freddy Krueger once had an affair with Pamela Voorhees and was personally responsible for killing young Jason back in the day.

A 90s Artifact

Broadly speaking, the Star Trek writers conceived of an ending similar to what we got in the final Freddy vs. Jason film. Freddy comes back into the real world but still has all his powers, enabling him to put up a crazy fight as he and Jason have a showdown in a shopping mall (just in case you had forgotten this was the most 90s script ever made).

Jason eventually blows the both of them up with a propane tank, and the film ends with the Crystal Lake killer’s home being bulldozed as a camera lingers on a picture of Jason when he was young and alive.

Sympathy For The Killer

While the subject matter of the film is bonkers in and of itself, the strangest thing about these Star Trek writers’ script is the bizarre tone. Their Freddy vs. Jason was going to be a satire of the O.J. trial, but the script also wanted Jason to be a more human and very sympathetic figure. This erratic tone sabotages their attempts at humor, and instead of being a witty horror deconstruction like Scream, the movie comes across like a forgotten draft of a Scary Movie sequel.

From The Minds Behind Deep Space Nine

Long story not very short, Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga are sci-fi icons who are largely responsible for making Star Trek into a modern mainstream franchise thanks to shows like The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. With that being said, their Freddy vs. Jason script looks absolutely awful, and we’re glad that the surprisingly great film that eventually hit theaters was completely different. Given how bad this script is, it’s now completely clear why horror fans won’t be asking these Star Trek scribes to “scream me up” ever again.
