Star Trek: Deep Space Nine And Voyager Follow-Up Series Details Revealed
While nothing has been announced yet, showrunner Terry Matalas would like to create a show inspired by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, in a new series he'd call Star Trek: Legacy.
There’s a lot of movement currently happening in the world of Star Trek, and as Star Trek: Picard is approaching its series finale (April 21, 2023), fans of the series are wondering what’s next. After all, Picard has been a perfect continuation of the 90s Star Trek vibe we all know and love, and showrunner Terry Matalas has stated that he would love to continue this form of storytelling by potentially revisiting two 90s Star Trek staples: Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, in a new series he’d like to call Star Trek: Legacy. Though there are plans to renew Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds, nothing is set in stone for this new series, but Matalas would certainly love to develop a series, according to Den of Geek.
While Matalas has been vocal on social media and at Galaxy Con, he is admittedly not working on anything at the moment. But his intentions are pure in getting diehard fans fired up to speak their minds for a Star Trek series that revisits the plots and characters of Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, both of which had their heyday in the 90s. Matalas suggested that power lies in the hands of the fans in the form of letter campaigns and expressing their desire to see these series return in the form of Star Trek: Legacy.
And there’s certainly room for another Star Trek series that occupies Deep Space Nine and Voyager territory, considering that Discovery will see its fifth and final season sometime in 2024. At Galaxy Con, Matalas asked a panel of enthusiastic fans what they thought about further exploring the Klingon empire and seeing what The Doctor’s up to these days, and of course, they are curious, to say the least. Though DS9 and Voyager both wrapped up perfectly in their finales, Picard’s highly successful three-season run has showed us all that there is certainly something special about revisiting this era of Star Trek’s storytelling.
This begs the question, how can Star Trek piggyback off the storytelling of Deep Space Nine and Voyager if both series had what are considered to be satisfying endings? Matalas has stated that he would love to revisit Ro Laren’s (Ensign Ro) story that started in the fifth season of The Next Generation, and continued throughout Deep Space Nine. It’s safe to say that Ro’s surprise cameo in Picard has opened a lot of doors for a potential new series, considering she left Picard her Bajoran earring, which contained files on her entire investigation of the changelings who have compromised Starfleet.
As of now, we’re in the stages of wishful thinking, however. Though Terry Matalas seems quite enthusiastic about expanding the Star Trek universe from where we left off in Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and the soon-to-be-concluded Picard, there’s nothing definitively stating that we’ll see Legacy any time soon. What we do know is that if given the opportunity, Matalas would love to develop such a series and bring back the stories and characters that made all of the Star Trek properties from the 90s so iconic.
