Star Trek: Discovery has been a rollercoaster of quality for long-time fans of the franchise, but the recent series finale twist actually was pretty well-received. While that may be true for the majority of the fanbase, Star Trek: Enterprise’s Dominic Keating had a much more negative take on the events. For those who haven’t seen the finale, David Cronenberg’s mysterious Doctor Kovich revealed that he’s actually the time-traveling Agent Daniel, to which Keating said, “That pissed me off, I gotta say.”

An Enterprise Star Takes Issue With The Twist

In an interview with TrekNews.net, Dominic Keating and Connor Trinneer talked about the Star Trek: Discovery finale twist. To Keating, he said the reveal felt like “a slap in the face.” Keating, who played Lt. Malcolm Reed in Star Trek: Enterprise, gave some reasoning for his disappointment with the finale. Specifically, he talked about how Matt Winston, who played Daniels in Enterprise, would be brought back a couple of times a season for all of the best episodes.

Upset An Enterprise Star Wasn’t Included

Keating gave the caveat that Winston was a lovely guy and very good actor but added, “there was resentment there, “I gotta be [honest]. I wasn’t as resentful as some. They underused us, I think.” In other words, it seems like Keating is mostly upset that the Enterprise tie-in for the Star Trek: Discovery twist involved a character who got to swoop in for the spotlight, while he felt other Enterprise actors, like himself, were underutilized throughout the show.

Doctor Kovich

Star Trek Agent Daniels

While Keating’s complaints about the Star Trek: Discovery finale twist might be applicable to him, it would be hard for too many others to relate (other than his fellow Enterprise castmates who may harbor similar feelings. As far as the Trek fan base goes, the twist was widely enjoyed and helped deepen the ties between Discovery and Enterprise. It also gives a lot of context to the characterization and actions of Doctor Kovich, who has always played (purposefully) as a bit of an enigma since his introduction in the third season of Discovery.

Star Trek Lives On

Regardless of how Keating feels about the Star Trek: Discovery twist, the final season of the show has been met with mostly warm reception, and the franchise is now ready to move on to the next thing. Namely, we have new seasons of Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds to look forward to in the coming months. In addition to the existing shows, we also have some movies and new TV shows on the docket for the beloved sci-fi franchise.

A Different Side Of The Federation

Fans will undoubtedly be thinking about the ramifications of Star Trek: Discovery’s finale twist while we wait for these new projects. But one character from Discovery will also be getting the spotlight soon when we see Michelle Yeoh reprise her role as Philippa Georgiou in the upcoming Section 31 special movie event. That film will dive deeper into the titular secret Starfleet organization, and perhaps we could see some characters from Discovery pop up in the narrative.

There’s also Starfleet Academy on the way, a prequel film, and a film set in the Kelvin Timeline. In the meantime, you can check out the Star Trek: Discovery finale twist for yourself on streaming. The series is available on Paramount+.
