Squid Game Season 3 Reveals The End Of Netflix Smash Hit Series
Netflix’s most popular series to date, Squid Game, will be returning for Season 2 on December 26. In a statement, director, producer, and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk let fans know that Squid Game will come to an end in Season 3, projected to release sometime in 2025.
Season 3 Renewed Ahead Of Season 2 Premiere
Season 1 of Squid Game cinched Netflix’s title of most popular series of all time with over 1.65 billion hours of viewing (190,000 years) accrued in its first 28 days on the platform. The series received 14 Emmy nominations and six wins, including outstanding directing for a drama series and outstanding lead actor in a drama series. With so many accolades, it’s no surprise that Squid Game was renewed for season 3.
Season 2 of Squid Game will pick up the plot right where season one left it, as shown by the 2024 sizzle reel Netflix released in February of this year. Lee Jung-jae will be reprising his role as the protagonist, Seong Gi-hun. Also returning to the screen are actors Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo. Fans will just have to wait and see if these characters will make it to Squid Game season three.
Picking Up Where 456 Left Off
According to Netflix’s official description, season 2 of Squid Game will follow Player 456 as he uses his winning money to fund a search for the man in the suit who plays ddakji. As he gets closer and closer to uncovering the organization behind the sadistic competition, he realizes that to end the game, he must re-join it. Hopefully, for season 3 of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk can give Player 456 a bit of a break.
Robbery, Or Perfectly Paced Run?
Though no one likes to beat a dead horse, fans of the series are sad that Squid Game will be wrapped up in only three seasons. However, with Netflix’s infamous reputation for canceling series just when they start to pick up momentum, there is gratitude that Hwang Dong-hyuk was even given the opportunity to finish his captivating story.
Squid Game: The Challenge
Along with the announcement of Squid Game season 3, Netflix also announced that they would be renewing the live-action reality show, Squid Game: The Challenge, for season two. There has been far less commotion surrounding this renewal as the first season seemed to be a production nightmare and placed contestants under less-than-ethical circumstances.
Also, as many fans of the original series have pointed out, the existence of the reality show completely undermines the message Hwang Dong-hyuk was trying to convey in the original Squid Game.
Plenty of Time To Catch Up On Season 1
Squid Game season two will premiere on Netflix on December 26th. As of right now, a release timeline has not been revealed for season three of Squid Game, but Hwang Dong-hyuk hopes for a 2025 release. After a three-year hiatus between season 1 and season 2, fans are ecstatic that the final installment will have a tight turnaround. For readers who have not watched the series, we highly encourage you to try it out before season 2 debuts; it didn’t receive all this fanfare for nothing.
