Spy x Family CODE: White Finally Streaming Outside Japan
Spy x Family is a popular anime series internationally, thanks to its interesting storyline and comedic elements. In 2023, a film for the hit series, called Spy x Family: CODE: White came out, and did pretty well for itself at the box office. Those who missed the United States theater release though will be excited to note that the film is finally on Crunchyroll for North American viewers as of September 5.
Same Family, New Mission
CODE: White still follows the favorite characters from Spy x Family, but they’re on a new mission. In particular, the story focuses on trying to keep the “family” together when Loid (Takuya Eguchi) is told that due to making much progress with Operation Strix, he is about to be replaced on the mission.
Meanwhile, due to an unfortunate interaction with Fiona (Ayane Sakura), Yor (Saori Hayami) believes Loid is planning on ending their fake relationship. Like always, it’s up to Bond (Kenichirou Matsuda) and Anya (Atsumi Tanezaki) to keep their relationship together and help further the mission so that Loid won’t be reassigned.
For Both Die-Hard Fans And Casual Viewers
CODE: White is a side story of Spy x Family, but it isn’t necessary to watch the series first before enjoying the movie. Though it will offer more context and backstory, there is enough of an introduction of the main characters that the story still stands up on its own, according to viewers. Additionally, the film is a stand-alone, meaning those enjoying the series don’t necessarily have to watch the movie.
Like the Spy x Family series, CODE: White is a collaboration between Wit Studio (Ranking of Kings) and CloverWorks (My Dress-Up Darling). However, the directors are different. For the TV series, Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Mononoke) and Takahiro Harada (The Promised Neverland) directed Season One and Season Two, respectively. Meanwhile, Takashi Katagiri (Bubble) handled the movie.
Leans Into What Works
The film is perfect for fans of the Spy x Family TV show, containing much of the same comedic elements and drama the original is known for. On My Anime List, Spy x Family CODE: White has an 8.16 average score. Even those who aren’t big anime fans found the film enjoyable, as it has a 94 percent critic score and a 98 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
A Box Office Sensation
Spy x Family CODE: White was first released in Japan on December 22, 2023. On April 19, 2024, CODE: White came to North American theaters. There, it did quite impressive, managing to make it to the 20th highest-grossing anime film of all time in the United States after only running in theaters for a week. It even beat out My Hero Academia: Two Heroes.
In Japan, it did even better, having grossed over 6 billion yen ($42 million) in the country. This makes it the highest-grossing film of 2024 in Japan so far.
Finally Streaming On Crunchyroll
If you missed the theater release, though, don’t worry. Thankfully, as of September 5, 2024, the film is available in subbed and dubbed on Crunchyroll.
If you’re ready to sit down and watch Spy x Family CODE: White, it’s available to watch on Crunchyroll for premium members. The first two seasons of Spy x Family are also on Crunchyroll. With the third season confirmed in June 2024, it’s the perfect time to get caught up on the movie and the already-released seasons.
