Miles Morales is finally back! Sony has released the first look teaser of the much-anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to the Oscar-winning 2018 animated feature. The teaser reveals that not only is our favorite web-slinger is back in action, but also ready to set off on adventures across different dimensions with Spider Gwen. And the icing on the cake is the big revelation the official title of Spider-Verse 2 makes.
While the first film was majorly set in Miles’ world that was teaming with villains and alternate versions of Spider-Man, the Spider-Verse 2 will see the young superhero swinging across different universes after being visited by Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen who can travel across dimensions. As promised by writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller in a chat with Entertainment Weekly, every dimension will be unique and will feel “radically different from all the others.” But of course, Miles’ life is never easy and on this dimension-hopping adventure, one of the adversaries he will be facing off against will be Miguel O’Hara, a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099, voiced by Oscar Isaac, who was seen in the post-credits sequence in the first film. Check out the teaser below:
While characters like Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and Peter B. Parker, the former’s reluctant mentor, are returning for Spider-Verse 2, it is yet to be confirmed whether we will be greeted by other characters like SP//dr/Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and Peter Parker/Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage). Lord and Miller have hinted that while Miles will be meeting up with new friends in the sequel, he will be reuniting with some old friends as well.
The teaser also reveals the official title of the sequel: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). Yep, there will be a Part Two as well. When the writers began the process of drafting the script for Spider-Verse 2 there were just too many interesting ideas and amazing plotlines, which would have been too much to fit in a single sequel. So, in order to ensure that every one of their meticulously planned plot arcs for Miles’ story made it into the film, they decided to divide it into two parts. Lord and Miller have revealed that they are working on both the films and shared that Part Two will hit the theaters sometime in 2023.
The voice cast of Spider-Verse 2 Part One includes Shameil Moore as Miles Morales / Spider-Man, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker / Spider-Man, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara / Spider-Man, and Issa Rae as Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman. Lord has also previously teased the appearance of Takuya Yamashiro a.k.a. the “Japanese Spider-Man” who first appeared in the 1978 Spider-Man TV series. Takuya is a motorcycle racer who moonlights as the “Supaidāman” with the help of a bracelet that allows him to turn into a superhero. Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson are directing Across the Spider-Verse: Part One.
Part One of Spider-Verse 2 was originally meant to hit theaters in April 2022. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film is now scheduled to be released on October 7, 2022. Apart from Part 2 of the sequel, a spin-off film is also in development. It will focus on different female characters like Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen, Cindy Moon / Silk, and Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman.
