CW’s Arrowverse and Diney+’s MCU series are about to have competition as Amazon Prime and the newly formed and yet-to-be-relaunched MGM+ are announcing they will be jumping into the superhero small screen. While the small screen has been the place for DC to thrive in the last few decades with hits like SmallvilleArrow, and Flash; Marvel and Disney+ took the idea and ran with it when they took the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Disney+ and continued the sagas of some characters with Hawkeye and Loki while introducing new ones with Moon Knight and She/Hulk. According to Deadline, MGM+ will be the home of an entire suite of live-action series from the Spider-Man universe, starting with the Spider-Man spin-off Silk: Spider Society

Sony has long controlled the rights of Spider-Man and nearly 900 other characters, keeping them from entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe without their involvement. The new venture has been a priority to use the properties for a long time, and the order is now going to trigger a sprawling suite of series that is looking to rival the other companies with a deep roster of characters all surrounding the webhead. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller will executive produce the suite of Spider-Man projects, while Angela Kang will serve as the showrunner for Silk: Spider Society

Spider-Man fans know that Silk is the alter ego of Cindy Moon, a teenager who was bitten by the same spider that gave Peter Parker his powers; after biting him on the hand, it fell to the floor and bit Cindy on the ankle before dying. She was eventually taken into custody and hidden away in a bunker where she learned how to use her powers and hide from those that would do her harm, emerging into the world again after thirteen years of hiding and the world getting used to Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man. She is a Korean-American known for her grey and white suit with webbing on the torso and a red mask covering the bottom half of her face.

The Spider-Man spin-off series Silk: Spider Society‘s showrunner, Angela Kang, is no stranger to massive properties jumping from book to screen as she is most well known for her time on The Walking Dead. She is also attached to be the showrunner for two of the series’s spin-offs, one being an undisclosed project and the other being The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. She has also worked as both a writer and a director in the world of The Walking Dead, meaning she knows and understands how to create the sprawling world the new suite will require.

This suite order gives MGM+ and Amazon a lot of potentials to expand the Spider-Man franchise beyond its titular character, and Silk: Spider Society is merely the beginning. While most fans seem to want Sony to fold the franchise into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the company has already proven what they can do with the characters if the right team is behind it; see Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse over Morbius. For those of you unfamiliar with the character, she has already appeared in the MCU; one of Tom Holland‘s classmates, named Cindy, was played by Tiffany Espensen in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War.
