Spider-Man Noir Series Casts Iconic Actor Alongside Nicolas Cage

Amazon’s upcoming Spider-Man Noir series has added Brendan Gleeson to the cast list. Reports indicate that Gleeson will be playing the villain in the series opposite Nicolas Cage in the titular role, though Gleeson’s actual role hasn’t been officially confirmed. This is Gleeson’s first role since his Oscar-nominated role in 2022’s The Banshees of Inisherin.

The Spider-Man Spinoff Is Taking Shape

The Spider-Man Noir series also recently cast Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson, a familiar face from the Spider-Man comics. Morris’ notable projects include roles in Fargo, New Girl, and Game Night. Unlike Gleeson, we got some insight into Morris’ role as Robbie Robertson’s character description was revealed as “A dedicated journalist trying to make it with the odds stacked against him as a black professional in 1930s New York,” adding that he pursues riskier stories that other journalists won’t touch.

Gleeson’s Role Is Unknown

The Spider-Man Noir series takes place in 1930s New York and follows the titular character as a down-on-his-luck PI who struggles with his past as the city’s only superhero. Nicolas Cage first portrayed the character in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, though the Amazon series will be live-action. It’s unclear if he’ll be playing the same version seen in Into the Spider-Verse or if the series will be creating its own version of the character.

Based on the description, it seems that the Spider-Man Noir series will carve its own path and possibly adapt the comics. This means that Brendan Gleeson’s character is likely from the comics, so fan theories are sure to start forming right away. Most of Noir’s villains in the comics are 1930s twists on traditional Spider-Man villains, so it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Gleeson playing someone like Doc Ock.

Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot created the Spider-Man Noir series and the two will also be co-showrunners and executive producers. They developed the show working with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal, who all worked on Into the Spider Verse. Lord, Miller, and Pascal will also executive produce the series along with Harry Bradbeer, who is on board to direct the first two episodes.

Multiple Stars Attached Is A Good Sign For Its Future

Black Comedy

The Spider-Man Noir series is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios as the two studios partnered to bring various Spider-Man related projects to the small screen. Silk: Spider Society was the first of their collaborations to get the green light, but that show has been put on the shelf. With the progress made in the Spider-Man Noir series and the casting of actors like Cage, Gleeson, and Morris, it seems likely that this series won’t meet the same fate.

Spider-Noir

It was also recently reported that the Spider-Man Noir series has been officially titled Spider-Noir, though it remains to be seen if that name will stick. While an official release window for the series hasn’t been revealed yet, we know that it’s set to air domestically on MGM+’s linear channel and that it will air globally on Amazon Prime Video. Stay tuned; we’ll keep you updated on the show’s casting announcements, release date, and other news.
