Spider-Man Was Just Defeated At The Box Office By A Movie No One Saw Coming
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts beat out Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse this past weekend at the box office.
Hollywood recently witnessed an exciting battle between Miles Morales’ Spider-Man and the mighty Transformers at the box office. However, it was the bots that emerged victorious. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the seventh installment in the franchise, made a remarkable debut, claiming the top spot with an impressive $60.5 million in North American theaters.
According to Box Office Mojo, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse wasn’t too far behind. The movie put up a strong fight in its second weekend by amassing $55.4 million. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts also made a significant impact in international markets, generating a substantial $110 million. These earnings brought its early global total to $170.5 million.
The film had a strong opening in China, amassing $40 million, surpassing the starts of several recent Hollywood releases and ranking as the second-largest opening of the year thus far. Rise of the Beasts serves as a direct sequel to 2018’s Bumblebee and a prequel to the original Transformers live-action series, which featured Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox among others.
The box office success of Sony Animation’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continues despite a 55 percent decline in its second weekend. The film’s domestic total currently stands at an impressive $225.4 million in just 10 days, surpassing the entire U.S. run of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which earned $190.4 million. The movie added another $47 million internationally, bringing its tally overseas to $164.5 million.
China emerged as the top-performing international market, contributing a substantial $34.1 million to the global success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The United Kingdom ranks second with a box office total of $20.3 million, while Mexico follows in third place with $19.9 million. Australia has also shown strong support for the film, generating $10.9 million.
Finally, Brazil completes the top five international markets, contributing $8 million to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Meanwhile, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts marks the triumphant return of the franchise after a five-year hiatus. Directed by Steven Caple Jr., the movie debuted with numbers that surpassed the past two installments.
In comparison, the 2018 reboot Bumblebee opened with a three-day total of $21.6 million, while 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight started with just $44.6 million. Rise of the Beasts follows Optimus Prime and the Autobots as they face a formidable new threat capable of obliterating the entire planet. So they join forces with the Maximals to safeguard the world from imminent destruction.
Despite falling to second place at the box office, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has done well amidst the unpredictable ups and downs of the theatrical landscape. Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers, the movie features the voices of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, and Daniel Kaluuya.
The story begins when Miles Morales, aka Spider-Man, meets a diverse group of Spider-People who have taken on the responsibility of safeguarding the existence of the multiverse. However, when a new threat emerges, the heroes find themselves divided on the best course of action. This conflict prompts Miles to redefine his own understanding of heroism to protect his loved ones.
