Spider-Man 4 With Sam Raimi And Tobey Maguire Hinted At By Classic Villain Actor
After what a success Spider-Man: No Way Home was both critically and financially, it has led to a great deal of interest in what Spider-Man movie we may see next. There is of course interest in seeing Tom Holland extend his version of the character beyond a trilogy, but Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire also dusted off their Spider-Man costumes for the movie and fans have wondered if they might now return for a sequel to their respective takes on Spidey. If Thomas Haden Church, who played the Sandman in Spider-Man 3, is to be believed, we might be seeing Sam Raimi get a crack at Spider-Man 4 nearly two decades later.
Thomas Haden Church Would Return
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Church recalled playing the Sandman in Raimi’s final Spider-Man film. Though Spider-Man 3 was regarded as the weakest entry in the trilogy and effectively ended Raimi’s reign on the character, Sandman’s storyline was praised as one of the highlights of the movie. The Sandman did survive and redeem himself at the end of the movie, and Church says he has heard rumblings that there is interest in bringing him back to do Spider-Man 4.
The Return of Sam Raimi
“I think Sam is gonna do another Spider-Man with Tobey,” said Church. “They had an option for me to do Spiderman 4 when there was going to be a Spiderman 4. They had an option on me to come back. So if it happens, that would be fantastic. I’m getting a little old.” Age certainly has not stopped other actors from reprising some of their classic superhero roles, though. Just look at Michael Keaton recently putting on the cape once again to become Batman. So, even with the passing of time, it is hard to imagine Maguire passing up on Spider-Man 4 if the opportunity is available.
Sony Dropped The Ball With Spider-Man 3
And if Sam Raimi’s opinion holds much weight on the matter, he is fully on board for Spider-Man 4 happening according to multiple sources. Though when speaking on the topic in the past, he did have the caveat that there would need to be a strong story and villain to fully convince him to be part of the project. Which, given the way Spider-Man 3 was forced to include Venom due to studio interference, is an understandable stipulation from the director. While plenty of fans wanted Venom, few will defend the version we got in the third film, whose classic storyline had to be severely truncated to fit into an already-packed movie.
Tobey Maguire Would Put On The Webs Again
So if Church is willing, Raimi is willing, and Maguire is willing again after the positive response of No Way Home, that seems like it lays a lot of the groundwork for Spider-Man 4 to happen. However, the biggest obstacle is no doubt Sony. After all, Sony are the ones who pulled the plug on Spider-Man 4 years ago. And with Tom Holland still their youngest prospect for new Spider-Man movies, would they really want to take a gamble by shifting attention back to Maguire? Is there room enough for two actors to be playing Spider-Man concurrently in separate movies?
It would definitely be a unique risk, but given Sony has already taken some big swings and misses on movies like Morbius and Madame Web, Spider-Man 4 finally happening all these years later does not sound like such a crazy idea.
