Spider-Man 4 Leaving Peter Parker Behind?
Since Jon Watts rounded out his Spider-Man trilogy with 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have been wondering when we’ll see Tom Holland return for another standalone movie. Recently, the rumor mill has been working overtime with speculation that director Justin Lin may step in to helm Spider-Man 4 with filming to begin as soon as this fall. Fresh intel states that Peter Parker will fully leave his old life behind – allowing his friends Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya) to pursue their collegiate goals and solely pour his time and efforts into becoming Spider-Man.
Spidey Becomes More Of A Loner
Without his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) there, Peter also has no family, only giving him more of a reason to live as Spider-Man in a city where no one knows him. The report compares Peter’s journey in Spider-Man 4 to that of “Robert Pattinson’s Batman in The Batman.”
No More Avenging Spider-Man
When we last left off with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, things were pretty lonely. After messing with magic that blended timelines together and losing his beloved Aunt May to the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), the final moments of No Way Home see Peter starting over as the spell ultimately deletes him from everyone’s memory. This is an interesting place to pick up for Spider-Man 4 because, in addition to his two best friends having no recollection of his existence, this means that he’s unknown to everyone in the Avengers and Stark Industries, as we see in the final moments where he’s fashioning his own suit.
From Rags To Riches To Rags Again
Regardless of how Spider-Man 4 picks up the torch from here, it’s going to be choppy waters ahead for Peter Parker as he rebuilds his life with no support from his loved ones. When we met the character in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, he was a teenager grappling with the knowledge that he was a superpowered being. That was before Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) decked him out with top-of-the-line technology so we know Peter has it in him to return to rags after being thrust into riches and it could make for an interesting story to watch him regain his footing.
Justin Lin Or Drew Goddard
As for those involved with Spider-Man 4, the early rumblings (as we mentioned above) are placing Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond, F9) as one of the directors in early talks with Sony. The film is rumored to start shooting in September or October. According to those initial reports, Cabin in the Woods director, Drew Goddard, is also in the running with Zendaya and Tom Holland allegedly returning to their roles as MJ and Peter Parker aka Spider-Man.
Sony May Want To Spill The Tea Soon
With so much still up in the air, the only certain thing is that fans can’t wait to see what happens next for our favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Interest is already circulating, so Sony may learn that sooner is better when it comes to Spider-Man 4 as it’s likely to rake in big bucks.
