Spider-Man 4 Director Is A Marvel Familiar
The MCU has had some major ups and downs in recent years, but Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films have always been great exemplars of the superhero genre. After the multiversal mashup of No Way Home, everyone has been dying to know the details about this wacky web-head’s next cinematic outing. Now, we may know who will be bringing us this film: Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is currently in talks to direct Spider-Man 4.
The Director Of Shang-Chi Is Back
If Cretton officially becomes the Spider-Man 4 director, then it will allow Disney and Sony to effectively have it both ways. He is a proven quantity to the studio, having already directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, he has never helmed a Spider-Man movie before, meaning that this franchise can breathe some new life into Peter Parker’s onscreen adventures without them growing too stale.
A Legacy Of Success
Jon Watts brought us the first three Spider-Man MCU films, and many consider him a worthy successor to Sam Raimi (who brought us the original Spidey trilogy starring Tobey Maguire) and Marc Webb (who brought us the flawed but fun pair of films starring Andrew Garfield). It sounds like Spider-Man 4 is likely to have a brand new director, and that is only fitting because the next movie has completely changed the status quo for our titular hero.
Brand New Day
Much of Spider-Man: No Way Home was spent dealing with the fallout of Peter Parker being exposed as Spider-Man in the previous film. After his own bit of multiversal madness, the movie ended with everyone’s memory of his secret identity being wiped, which heartbreakingly included his girlfriend, MJ. Spider-Man 4 will presumably illustrate how this return to the previous status quo affects Peter Parker’s new life, and many are excited that a new director will helm this new chapter in the beleaguered hero’s life.
Shang-Chi Was A Hit
While he is new to Spider-Man’s onscreen adventures, Destin Daniel Cretton isn’t new to Marvel, having previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. For many fans, he is a good choice for Spider-Man 4 because the director’s previous superhero film was a hit: it has a 91 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes and made $432.2 million against a budget of $150-$200 million. Some fans have quibbled over whether that means it was a modest box office success or failure after accounting for the costs of marketing, but few can deny the crowd-pleasing quality of the film.
The Unknown Future Of The MCU
Considering the sheer popularity of the title hero, Spider-Man 4 is likely to be a much bigger hit, one that could potentially make Cretton one of the bigger directors in the Marvel Universe. Such prominence may be that much more important as we enter into the brave new world of movies like Doomsday, Secret Wars, and the long-rumored reboot of the entire MCU.
Here’s hoping that Spidey’s next Hollywood outing is an unqualified hit rather than one that leads to our embarrassing confession to Robert Downey Jr.’s newest character: “Mr. Von Doom, I don’t feel so good.”
