Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is coming to the Super Bowl this week with the latest trailer dropping heading into the weekend. For fans of the franchise, it’s an exciting new look at the character and what he’ll be up against in this new movie. And from the looks of things, this follow-up film will hold a bit tighter to the actual video game in terms of some character looks. Plus, we are going to get Knuckle the Echidna in the mix now, offering up a new threat to the little blue speedster.
The latest trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which will air Super Bowl Sunday, has a little bit of a football theme to it as well as a Winter Olympics vibe just to cover a couple of different bases. Not a bad marketing ploy to kick things off, so to speak. Plus, we even get a little Marvel Cinematic Universe reference along the way. From the looks of things, the movie is sticking with a solid comedic backbone while offering some updated animation as well. It appears more than a worthy successor to the successful first go-around for the franchise. Check out the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trailer:
While the beginning of the trailer is merely a nod to the Big Game, the rest of what we see is footage from the actual Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While some of the early trailers for the movie focused mostly on how Sonic’s relatively quiet life in Green Hills has become a bit too boring before being interrupted by Doctor Robotnik’s return, this one dives right into the action of the film. We have Sonic and Knuckles fighting down a ski slope with a little Winter Soldier reference. There’s plenty of other dialed-up intensity in the interactions as well with all parties looking to take hold of the Master Emerald, similar to the mechanics of the video game franchise.
While Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be the first time we see Knuckles in the franchise, Jim Carrey’s Doctor Robotnik is returning from the first movie. But this time his look is a bit more in line with the original video games, something that fans weren’t enamored with the first time around. Others returning will be Ben Schwartz voicing the titular character, Colleen O’Shaughnessy as Tails, James Marsden as Tom, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie. Idris Elba will voice Knuckles.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will look to capitalize on the success of the first movie which came out in 2020, just a month or so before the pandemic started shutting everything down. On its $90 million it went on to earn about $320 million dollars at the box office worldwide. It scored above average with critics as well, sitting at 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. This next movie will hit big screens on April 8th of this year. If this trailer is any indication it could end up eclipsing the success of the first movie.
