While Sofia Vergara is more known for her Emmy-worthy work on comedies like Modern Family, it seems like her next big role is going to be taking her career in an entirely different direction. Vergara is set to play the infamous drug lord Griselda Blanco, and her transformation is stunning. Vergara took to Instagram to show off the makeup that will be turning her into the cartel queen pin known as the Black Widow. You can see the pic at the post below:

It’s safe to say that Sofia Vergara is basically unrecognizable in this post. While Vergara is known for her acting talent, she also has stunning beauty to match. As a real-life figure from cartel history, Blanco has a much more intimidating look and basically looks nothing like Sofia Vergara. However, seeing this post makes it clear that Vergara is embracing every aspect of the role. There’s little doubt that this will be an intense performance from Vergara and the opposite of her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in Modern Family.

The TV series that Sofia Vergara is gearing for is titled, Griselda. It’s set to be a six-episode miniseries from Netflix, coming from many members of the creative team of the hit show Narcos. Vergara will be playing the titular role as Griselda Blanco Restrepo. Griselda Blanco was notorious for helping build the Medellin Cartel and was heavily involved in the Miami cocaine trade from the 1980s to the early 2000s. While history is unclear on her relationship with Pablo Escobar, speculation says that Escobar may have even been Griselda’s protege. It’s believed that Blanco ordered the murder of several of her husbands, leading her to earn the nickname “Black Widow.” For more obvious reasons, she also had the nicknames “The Godmother” and “The Godmother of Cocaine.” Griselda Blanco was killed in 2012 by gunshot after she had apparently retired from her cartel life.

Clearly, Griselda Blanco will require some intensity from Sofia Vergara, and it seems like she’ll be more than up to the task. This will be her first TV role since Modern Family wrapped up in 2020. Though Vergara was nominated four times throughout Modern Family‘s 11-year run, she never ended up nabbing the award. Griselda seems like the perfect role that could end up netting her the Emmy trophy she’s missed out on so far.

Griselda is currently in the middle of filming, and Netflix hasn’t given us a release date quite yet. In addition to Vergara, Griselda stars Jose Velazquez, Martin Fajardo, Orlando Pineda, Tony Graham, Fredy Yate, Gabriel Sloyer, Camilo Jimenez Varon, Jose Zuniga, Maximiliano Hernandez, Alejandro Barrios, Julieth Restrepo, Mario Perez, and more. Andres Baiz, who directed multiple episodes of Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, is on for all six episodes. Ingrid Escajeda, known for her work on Justified and Sneaky Pete, is on as head writer and showrunner. The series will center on Griselda Blanco’s homelife as a devoted mother and her rise to power and control of the Colombian drug underworld.
