Spider-Man Spinoff Series Canceled At Amazon

The Amazon Spider-Man spin-off series Silk: Spider Society is officially off the table. It’s possible that the series could find a home elsewhere, as the Hollywood Reporter says that Sony TV is going to shop it to other buyers. The series comes from former Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang, who currently has a deal with Amazon and who will continue to develop projects for the streamer despite this one getting scrapped.

Noir

It’s interesting that Silk: Spider Society was canceled considering Amazon just announced another Spider-Man spin-off series titled Noir that sees Nicolas Cage reprising his role from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

That project is set to premiere on MGM+ before making the jump to Prime Video. Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Amy Pascal executive produce both shows, which are meant to be a series of shows starring Marvel characters that Sony Pictures has the rights to.

A Home At Disney?

For now, Noir is the only project that is officially planned for the Sony Marvel TV universe, though Silk: Spider Society could still be part of it if another buyer is found. As the Hollywood Reporter points out, it’s possible that the series could end up shopped to Disney, who has worked with Sony on bringing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to the MCU. But given Disney and Marvel Studios’ new approach to fewer projects with more quality, it seems unlikely they would snap up a scrapped show.

Silk

Silk: Spider Society was first announced in 2022 and was set to restart writing after the strikes last summer. During the delays, Amazon and Sony apparently took a look at what was already finished and decided not to move forward. The series would have starred fan-favorite comic-book character Cindy Moon, who is a Korean-American woman who is bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker.

A Lot Depends On Noir

Hopefully, Noir ends up being a solid project or we could see Sony’s Spider show universe fall flat before it even gets off the ground. Silk: Spider Society being scrapped definitely doesn’t bode well, especially considering Sony’s live-action efforts with Marvel characters, other than the Venom franchise, have been critical and commercial failures. Most recently, Madame Web bombed at the box office and sparked tons of memes due to how bad it was.

The State Of The Spider-Verse

However, Silk: Spider Society was going to be the first Sony TV Marvel series executive produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who both worked on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

The first two are some of the best Spider-Man films of all time, so there was hope that Lord and Miller could bring some of that magic to Sony’s live-action projects. But, with the upcoming Noir and the ability to use plenty of other Spider characters, it’s still possible that Lord and Miller could save Sony’s live-action Marvel efforts.

In the meantime, Sony’s film Marvel universe continues to chug along, with the next film being Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter. That film is set to hit theaters on December 13. Stay tuned and we’ll let you know if another streamer ends up buying Silk: Spider Society.
