Honey I Shrunk The Kid Series Reveals Devastating News To Fans
The upcoming Honey I Shrunk the Kids series with Josh Gad and Rick Moranis has been shelved.
For those waiting on a reboot of the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise, we may have some bad news. Actor Josh Gad shared on Twitter that the reboot movie of the beloved children’s franchise, simply titled Shrunk, is most likely not going to happen due to a few unfortunate circumstances. The Frozen actor said that if fans want Shrunk to happen, they will need to reach out to their local Disney and demand the film be made.
The 1989 movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is a classic children’s movie beloved by many. In the movie, Rick Moranis plays a scientist who builds a shrinking device that accidentally shrinks his two children along with two of their neighbors.
The hilarious and entertaining film follows the tiny children as they try to navigate a new, gigantic world and catch their father’s attention before they get run over by a lawnmower or eaten by the family dog.
A modern reboot of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids seems like a great idea, especially with all of the other classic reboots and sequels happening these days. Josh Gad shared that Shrunk was “inches from starting” before the pandemic hit, causing the film to be delayed.
On top of that, he admits that there were issues with the budget and scheduling conflicts, making the film’s production even more difficult.
If Shrunk does happen, it will be the fourth film in the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise, following the 1992 sequel Honey, I Blew Up the Kids, and the 1997 threequel Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.
Josh Gad would star as Nick Szalinski, the grown son of Rick Moranis’s character, Wayne Szalinski. In addition to Rick Moranis reprising his role, the director of the first film, Joe Johnston, would also return to film this movie.
If Rick Moranis made his return to the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise, it would be his first return to Hollywood since 1997’s straight-to-DVD film Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. After starring in several hit movies in the 80s, like Spaceballs, Parenthood, and Ghostbusters, he stepped away from the spotlight to focus on raising his kids after his wife tragically passed away from breast cancer in 1991.
Since the early 90s, Rick Moranis has primarily only done voiceover work for animated children’s shows, including Brother Bear and The Animated Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie.
While the plot of the potential Shrunk movie remains unknown, Josh Gad did share a fanmade teaser poster in his tweet. It features Rick Moranis with a magnifying glass as he looks at Marvel superheroes Ant-Man and The Wasp, who are both known for their ability to shrink.
While we would love an Ant-Man crossover with Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, we doubt this would actually happen.
If you want to see Rick Moranis return to Hollywood and shrink his family (and maybe team up with Paul Rudd), then do as Josh Gad suggests and tell Disney that Shrunk needs to be made.
