With production running on Shazam! Fury of the Gods, some details have been dripping out slowly throughout the last few months regarding its cast. The most recent is from a leaked image on the set of the DC movie from Atlanta_filming on Instagram, which shows Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy) as the Wizard.
The character from the first movie is a sorcerer who chooses a champion to take on the mantel as the hero. It is what leads to Billy Batson gain his powers and become the red-suited alter-ego. Previously, it was not confirmed that Hounsou would reprise his role in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. See the photo below.
The picture on the set of Shazam! Fury of the Gods shows a new hairdo for the Wizard. Without the gray, it seems we will see him in a flashback rather than with the continuing story that will be told in the sequel.
Hounsou’s sorcerer is not the only returning character to Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The confirmed stars reprising their roles are Zachary Levi (Chuck) as the hero, Asher Angel (Andi Mack) as Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer (It) as Freddy Freeman, Adam Brody (Ready or Not) as Super Hero Freddy, Faithe Herman (This Is Us) as Darla Dudley, Meagan Good (Brick) as Super Hero Darla, Grace Fulton (Annabelle: Creation) as Mary Bromfield and Super Hero Mary (replacing Hawaii Five-0‘s Michelle Borth), Ian Chen (The Rocketeer) as Eugene Choi, Ross Butler (13 Reasons Why) as Super Hero Eugene, Jovan Armand (The Middle) as Pedro Pena, D.J. Cotrona (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) as Super Hero Pedro, and Marta Milan (No Tomorrow) as Rosa Vasquez. No confirmation was made for Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead) to return as Rosa’s husband, Victor, but with her returning, it is safe to say he will too.
While we have plenty of new faces, there are some big names attached as newcomers for Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The daughters of god Atlas, Hespera and Kalypso, will be the antagonists. The former is played by Helen Mirren (The Last Station), and the latter is played by Lucy Liu (Kill Bill Vol. 1).
Riding off the success of its predecessor, which grossed $365 million and receiving some of the most positive reviews in the DC Extended Universe, David F. Sandberg is coming back to direct the sequel. The horror director known for Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation proved he could flip the switch to a comedic superhero action spectacle. With its cast and the hit from the first movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is heading in the right direction to meet the expectations set from the debut of the DC character.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods was set to start production last year during the spring and summer. Due to COVID-19, it got pushed to the spring and summer of this year in Atlanta. With the pandemic and regulations for filming, the current date for its release can change. Regardless of issues, it has plenty of time left as the sequel will release in theaters on Jun 2, 2023.
