Marvel has dropped a new Shang-Chi trailer that majorly focuses on its titular character and the criminal organization known as the Ten Rings organization led by Shang Chi’s father Wenwu a.k.a the Mandarin. While the focus of the trailer is some high-octane action scenes and a deeper look into Shang Chi’s life, what steals the spotlight is the shocking return of an iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe villain, who was actually one of the earliest villains that debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Abomination, who we met in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
Compared to the previous teasers and trailers, this Shang-Chi new trailer is more urgent and focuses on Shang-Chi’s dark past and his doomed future as his father, Wenwu, played by Tony Leung, is dead set on recruiting his estranged son to his organization. Leung will play the leader of the eponymous Ten Rings organization and is also known as “The Mandarin.” We have already been introduced to the Mandarin, but it was the fake one played by Ben Kingsley in Iron Man 3, something that really angered a lot of fans.
The new Shang-Chi trailer provides a better introduction to the Ten Rings organization as well as the source of its name i.e., the Ten Rings of immense power that Wenwu wear, which also get ample screen time in the trailer. While previous trailers had established that Shang-Chi’s father was trying to lure him back to a past he thought he had left behind, this trailer shows how Wenwu told his young son that the Ten Rings have been the source of their power. He ruthlessly trained his son throughout his life so one day, he would be strong enough to bear and wield the power of the rings as well.
As the Shang-Chi trailer closes, we get to see that Shang-Chi will indeed be worthy of the rings as he goes up against Wenwu. But even though, this five-second spectacle was a pure treat, what snags the attention of viewers is the shocking blink-and-miss scene seconds before the trailer ends when Awkwafina’s Katy says “you got this” to Shang-Chi and we get a glimpse of someone who looks like Wong (Benedict Wong), Doctor Strange’s sidekick fighting Abomination a.k.a. Emil Blonsky!
Abomination/Blonsky was first seen in The Incredible Hulk and was played by Tim Roth. He was a soldier in the Royal Marines Commandos and became Abomination when he gets injected with serums. But the film ended with the Hulk defeating Abomination after which he was arrested by General Ross. Recently, Kevin Feige confirmed that Tim Roth will be reprising his character in the upcoming Disney+ series, She-Hulk. However, the latest Shang Chi trailer establishes that he will be re-entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe a lot sooner.
Apparently, Abomination wasn’t the only surprise in the Shang-Chi trailer. In a scene where Shang-Chi is underwater, we see a giant dragon, who appears to be the classic Marvel comics villain Fin Fang Foom, staring at him. But, in this case, the scene is too blurry and quick to say anything for certain. For now, we will have to wait for Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings to release on September 3 for more concrete answers. The film’s release will be followed by Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home debuting in theaters on November 5 and December 17 respectively.
