Netflix’s Best Series Getting Multiple Spin-offs?
Sex Education creator Laurie Nunn says Netflix could see more than a fourth season. Debuting in 2019, the British teen comedy has become a hit on Netflix with rave reviews. With the popularity of the show established, spin-offs may be possible.
“Moordale is a really rich world, and writing about teenagers is always a lot of fun. So, I think that there’s always potential for more to be explored in that world.”
-Laurie Nunn on the possible of Sex Education spin-offs
Laurie spoke about Sex Education via Netflix Tudum. During this conversation, she broke the unfortunate news about the series that Season 4 will be the show’s last. When explaining the state of the last season, she described it as “It’s the end as we know it.”
But there is some good news for those invested in the series. Although Laurie is eager to pursue other projects, she’s not opposed to returning to the world she helped establish. The setting of Moordale Secondary School has established too many notable characters to let go of.
So, while Sex Education may be ending, the story of Moordale isn’t closed off. Laurie stated, “Moordale is a really rich world, and writing about teenagers is always a lot of fun. So, I think that there’s always potential for more to be explored in that world.”
Part of the appeal to continue onward is that Season 5 was almost considered. What held it back was the possibility of having to write characters out of the show for another season. Season 4 already had to remove Olivia (Simone Ashley), Lily (Tanya Reynolds), and Ola (Patricia Allison).
It seems that Netflix would be interested in continuing the show in some form. The show has become an awards darling, having been nominated and winning several awards.
If Sex Education were to continue, Season 5 would’ve seen the departures of characters Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) and Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa). With the cast dwindling, cutting the show off before nobody was left made sense. But this begged the question if Sex Education could continue without them.
A spin-off could expand the world of the series. Series regular Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson), a sex therapist, could remain the torch-passer for a new generation of characters. It’s not a sure thing, but it’s a possibility that Laurie Nunn may be considering.
It seems that Netflix would be interested in continuing the show in some form. The show has become an awards darling, having been nominated and winning several awards.
Most notable among those accolades is Aimee Lou Wood winning Best Female Comedy Performance from the BAFTA TV Awards. Another notable award win is Best Comedy Series at the 50th International Emmy Awards, winning for the third season.
The series also received plenty of praise for daring to tackle blossoming sexuality. IndieWire’s Liz Shannon Miller hailed the series as feeling like an authentic high school tale. The New York Times’s James Poniewozik praised the series for treating sexuality more like an aspect of health than titillation.
Sex Education creator Laurie Nunn says Netflix spin-offs may be on the way.
The possibility of a spin-off doesn’t seem too far off. There’s already a manga adaptation of the series that debuted last year from illustrator John Tarachine. Since the manga was serialized in Kadokawa Corporation’s Comic Bridge online manga magazine, it seems doable that the series can continue in some other form.
While no Sex Education spin-off has officially been announced, the possibility is high for a return to Moordale in Netflix’s future.
Sex Education is currently streaming on Netflix, with the fourth season set to debut on September 21, 2023.
