Tim Allen is back as Santa Claus in Disney’s official trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series The Santa Clauses. The trailer also features other returning cast members that include Elizabeth Mitchell, Eric Lloyd, and David Krumholtz as Bernard the Elf. The rest of the cast is rounded out by Kal Penn, Austin Kane, Elizabeth Allen-Dick, Matilda Lawler, Rupali Redd, Devin Bright, and Laura San Giacomo.
The trailer gives us a ton of info about the upcoming limited series. We see that Tim Allen’s Scott Calvin is finally ready to retire from his role as Santa Claus and spend more time with his family in the normal world. However, things seem to go awry when Calvin chooses a successor that doesn’t fit the role, leading to elves disappearing and the potential end of Christmas.
If you’re a fan of The Santa Clause trilogy, this new series definitely seems to keep up the family-comedy spirit of the previous films. Scott Calvin aka Santa is definitely one of Tim Allen’s most beloved roles, and this series looks to be the perfect continuation of the character. It’s also the only project Tim Allen has going on right now, other than his recently aired History Channel show More Power which he hosts and executive produces.
There was a big spin-off this year of Tim Allen’s other best role, Buzz Lightyear, which was a movie about the original Buzz Lightyear that the toy was based on. Chris Evans took on the role of Buzz Lightyear in the film, changing up the character’s voice for a feature film for the first time. With that being said, technically it wasn’t the same character so an argument could be made that Tim Allen didn’t need to be cast.
As far as future Toy Story movies go, Tim Allen has expressed interest in doing more, as he told ET after the release of Toy Story 4. While Toy Story 4 did seem to tie a pretty neat bow on the Toy Story characters, there’s always a possibility that Disney would want to make more. As evidenced by The Santa Clauses, it certainly seems like Allen would have no problem reprising his fan-favorite characters in more projects.
If you’re ready to see more of Tim Allen as Santa Claus, you won’t have long to wait since the series is hitting Disney+ with a two-episode premiere on November 16. Meanwhile, if you need some time to catch up on The Santa Clause trilogy before then, you’re in luck. All three movies are currently available to stream on Disney+ so you can be fully on board with the story before November 16 rolls around.
The most recent film was way back in 2006 with The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. This film saw Tim Allen’s Scott Calvin trying to balance his family duties while also stopping Martin Short’s Jack Frost from taking over Christmas. The Santa Clause movies have always been a great light-hearted way to ring in the holidays, so now is the perfect time to check them out for a movie night.
