See Noah Centineo As Atom Smasher In New Black Adam Footage
Noah Centino smashes!
Warner Bros is determined to go hard on 2022. After years of trailing behind Marvel Studios’ groundbreaking, box-office demolishing shared universe concept, it seems the studio is willing to just make it a numbers game. As such, they released a teaser clip compiling elements of many of their upcoming 2022 movies and it is a whole lot. First and foremost, you have megastar/sometime Joe Rogan apologist Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, longtime foe of Zachary Levi’s Shazam. We see the former slave and antihero in his uniform for the first time, as well as a long and swirling cape, looking very grim. According to the 2019 movie Shazam, he was the first inheritor of the Wizard’s powers, and pretty much used them to slaughter people. So we will see what happens there. We also get our first look at Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, a gargantuan superhero with his own troubled history with Black Adam. Check it out here:
In DC Comics, Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher character is the godson of Al Pratt aka The Atom, a Golden Age superhero whose power was that he was short, but strong (things were simpler then). In the comics, The Atom was a member of DC’s original superhero team, The Justice Society of America, which would eventually be succeeded by The Justice League of America, as seen in various versions of the film Justice League. In the upcoming Black Adam film, it appears that Atom Smasher is a member of the Justice Society; it is not currently known whether The Atom will be referenced or seen in the film. We do get a shot of Atom Smasher at about 48 seconds in the clip, towering over buildings. Presumably, he will come to blows with Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. In the comics, the two have frequently been foes and just as often allies, with Black Adam’s magical powers generally getting the better of Atom Smasher’s, uh, smashes.
Aside from Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, we also get a good look at Pierce Brosnan as the mystically powered superhero of the Justice Society of America, Dr. Fate. We see Dr. Fate aka Kent Nelson wearing his iconic golden helmet (which in comics continuity most often imbues him with the powers of the wizard Nabu, no relation to the wizard Shazam), and also with a seriously striking silver beard. As you might expect from a James Bond, Brosnan has aged exceedingly well. The clip includes glimpses at Robert Pattinson as Batman, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and of course, the character with the most convoluted continuity in DC Comics, Hawkman. And that’s just a small slice of the many projects that the DCEU is rolling out in the coming year. It will be interesting to see how Warner Bros’ new strategy of dominating the superhero movie market with overwhelming force will do against the behemoth of the MCU, but as always, it’s anyway’s game with DC vs Marvel. Black Adam will be released on July 29, 2022.
