Although the first part of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is still a long way from release, fans got some exciting news about Mission Impossible 8. In a post on social media, writer and director Christopher McQuarrie shared two images from the film announcing the casting of Nick Offerman and Janet McTeer. While both roles remain undisclosed, the photos do allow for some speculation. The Parks and Recreation alum appears to be wearing a service uniform with some medals visible, which points to a military role.

But McTeer’s picture provides fewer clues, as she is seen wearing a sharp-looking suit with an American flag pin on the lapel. The two men next to her (who can be seen when the image is expanded) are wearing the same pin. This could indicate that the Tumbleweeds star is playing a politician. Whether the pair will be on the good or bad side of Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 8 adventure is yet to be seen.

Alongside the casting news, McQuarrie also tagged the Light the Fuse Podcast – a show dedicated to the Mission Impossible franchise. The podcast’s official Twitter account then responded to the director, announcing that he and Offerman would be interviewed on an upcoming episode of the show. They also included a clip of the interview where the actor can be heard talking about working on Mission: Impossible 8.

The latest casting news comes as the franchise draws closer to its final curtain call in 2024. However, plot details for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is still a closely guarded secret. What we do know, is that the story will be told over the next two installments in the series. McQuarrie also previously revealed that Mission: Impossible 8 will bring Ethan Hunt’s narrative to an end.

And in an interesting change of pace, Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 will take the intrepid secret agent back to the beginning while creating a more emotional journey for the seemingly indestructible action hero. The last time we saw Ethan Hunt was in Hunt Mission: Impossible Fallout where he was tracking down missing plutonium with his team after a botched mission. The new installment will reunite lead star Tom Cruise with Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Frederick Schmidt, who are reprising their roles from the previous movies.

A few new faces will be joining Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 too. This includes Hayley Atwell, whose character has been described as “a destructive force of nature” by the film’s director. And Esai Morales is playing a mysterious villain. The supporting cast also includes Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, and Cary Elwes. While most of these actors were featured in the first Dead Reckoning trailer, it seems like a few cast members were kept under wraps.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will hit theaters on July 14, 2023. It will be followed by Nick Offerman’s debut in Mission: Impossible 8 in 2024. The actor is also set to appear in the upcoming Amazon Prime series, A League of Their Own.
