Few video game franchises are more recognizable than Tomb Raider. With its plot lines ripped straight from everything mystical and historical and a protagonist that can give Indiana Jones a run for his money, it was bound for success. However, the games would be nothing without the tomb raider herself, Lara Croft. After 17 games spanning from 1996 to 2018, the series became one of the most popular franchises of all time. This success made it a shoo-in for a film adaptation. Fans got superstar Angelina Jolie in two films in 2001 and 2003. There was a long wait before the franchise was rebooted 15 years later, with Alicia Vikander in the role. Now, a digital artist on Instagram has placed Emily Blunt in the Tomb Raider role. You can see the image below:
Diamonddead is an artist showing off their talents by creating fan art of some of the most beloved characters. A quick peruse through their page will show their abilities center mostly on creating movie posters of upcoming films or favorite fan castings. Everything from a Speed 3 film starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, a Turok film featuring Dwayne Johnson, and a Henry Cavill James Bond film litter a page you can get lost in for hours. However, one of the posts that stand out the most is a poster for Tomb Raider 2, featuring Emily Blunt as the archeologist and action hero. The artist says in the caption that the idea came to them while reading articles about possible replacements for Alicia Vikander and Blunt was their favorite suggestion.
Alicia Vikander only portrayed Lara Croft in one film in 2018, and it raked in over $270 million at the box office. While Tomb Raider got mixed reviews, the success of the theater run almost guarantees that we would see Vikander suit up for the sequel. However, The Wire explains that the studio that owned the rights, MGM, dragged its feet on developing the follow-up and missed its deadline of May 1, 2022. The rights have now reverted to the owner and game developer, Square Enix. That doesn’t mean that the chance for a sequel is dead; it just means it won’t be with MGM. This means that while Tomb Raider 2 isn’t as likely, Emily Blunt could be.
Emily Blunt has repeatedly proven that she can handle the in-your-face action a Tomb Raider movie would require. She showed her acting abilities in the action genre alongside Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow. She showed her ability to handle the jungle adventure while teamed up with Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise. And she can thrive in moments of peril, as shown in The Quiet Place. Blunt has what it takes to make Lara croft shine on the big screen again. Then again, it is possible that the big screen isn’t its destination. While Warner Bros. is a suitor for Square Enix, Netflix, Amazon, and Disney would all most likely be interested in adding another popular IP to their growing list of assets to put them on top.
