An Eddie Murphy Cancelled Spinoff Just Got Discovered, See The Full Episode
The canceled pilot of the Eddie Murphy Beverly Hills Cop spinoff series is online.
Back before we all got the wonderful news that Eddie Murphy would be returning to the role of Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, there was a pilot filmed for a spinoff series based in the same world. A fan has uploaded the full episode of this pilot, which you can find at this link. The pilot for this series had apparently been filmed in 2013, though it never saw the light of day, which was because of a testing screening flub that involved Murphy.
This spinoff series would have involved Axel Foley’s son, Aaron, who was portrayed by Brandon T. Jackson. Eddie Murphy was also going to appear in a cameo for the pilot of this Beverly Hills Cop TV series and had also filmed his part. The network wanted the famed funny man to be a recurring appearance, though Murphy denied that request, as he stated, “I’m not going to do Beverly Hills Cop on TV.
During the test screenings, as soon as Eddie Murphy appeared on screen for the Beverly Hills Cop spinoff, he stated that a ton of people nearly broke the nobs in acceptance of seeing Axel Foley. This led the network to push even further about landing Murphy as a recurring character, which he denied. leaving the series to be passed over by CBS. Jackson also revealed that another big reason led to the series not being picked up.
According to an interview with Zimbio in 2013, Jackson revealed the bigger reason this Eddie Murphy Beverly Hills Cop spinoff didn’t happen: “I think we were very edgy for CBS. I think we were the edgiest as you could’ve went for CBS. It would have been like a Fresh Prince thing on CBS, like the edgiest you can go on network TV.”
This is quite a shame, as it would have been interesting to see Eddie Murphy expand the universe of Beverly Hills Cop. Even more interesting is we wonder if the new sequel movie is going to involve Jackson back in the role of Aaron. The new Netflix-produced sequel is bringing back fan-favorite actors from the franchise like Judge Reinhold (Lt. William “Billy” Rosewood), Paul Reiser (Det. Jeffrey Friedman), and John Ashton (Sgt. John Taggart). We could be seeing many more surprises once this new movie releases a trailer.
Eddie Murphy has been returning to some of his best franchises, along with the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley sequel. He made a sequel to the hit 1980s movie, Coming to America, which was aptly titled Coming 2 America. The comedy brought back all the best characters in a movie that was released on Amazon Prime Video. Though the man has spent a good amount of time away from the spotlight, the releases of Dolemite is my Name and Coming 2 America have brought him right back to superstardom.
The above-canceled pilot of this Eddie Murphy Beverly Hills Cop spinoff did look like it could have been quite good if it was given a chance. Who knows, maybe Netflix can work on a new series once the sequel movie comes out. We certainly would love to see Jackson return as Aaron, if only for a quick cameo in the coming fourth installment.
