Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam doesn’t open in theaters until October 21, but we already know the film will have a much larger impact on the DC Extended Universe of films than previously thought. Although we still don’t know how the exact plot of the film will play out, it will be more than just a mere spinoff to Zachary Levi’s Shazam! The film will feature the debut of the character of Cyclone, best known to comic book fans as a member of the Justice Society of America (JSA). A new look at the character is here, which will give internet sleuths new clues as to what Black Adam will give eager moviegoers this fall.
DC Comics is releasing a one-shot comic book based solely on Cyclone, officially titled Black Adam – The Justice Society Files: Cyclone #1, which will serve as a prequel/tie-in to the Black Adam film. The cover was released by Comics Beat, and it gives a great look at Cyclone’s costume.
It is, as you might expect, identical to the character’s costume as seen ever-so-briefly in the trailer released by DC and Warner Brothers back in February (and featured below). As The Direct reported, the release of a prequel comic, as well as her presence in the DC trailer, indicate Cyclone and the JSA will have a significant role in the Black Adam film.
Cyclone, the alter-ego of Maxine Hunkel, will be played by Quintessa Swindell (In Treatment, Voyagers) in the film. In DC comic lore, Cyclone is a member of the Justice Society of America and the granddaughter of Red Tornado, a character that dates back to the earliest DC comics. She’s a fairly new character, having been introduced in the 1996 Elseworlds comic mini-series Kingdom Come. Not only can Cyclone fly, she can control the wind, much like Marvel Comics’ Storm of the X-Men. What is most revealing about the prequel comic is the plot synopsis, which confirms the JSA will be introduced into the DCEU. It also reveals that Hawkman (played by Aldis Hodge) will appear in the comic. “Maxine Hunkel dreamed of flying with the Justice Society,” the synopsis reads. “Now she finally has the powers and the opportunity…but will she say yes? Guest-starring Hawkman on the road to Black Adam!” Given Black Adam’s position as an anti-hero, and Cyclone’s urge to serve as a member of the JSA, it has been rumored that the two will likely face off in a battle at some point, with Hawkman (another JSA member) joining in as well.
Black Adam will not only serve as an origin story for Dwayne Johnson’s character of Teth-Adam, it will likely set a path for the characters in films to come. Introducing the Justice Society of America is a smart move for the DCEU to take, as it seems their current Justice League roster is in upheaval and may not move forward. Ben Affleck is leaving his role as Batman after The Flash film hits theaters, and Ezra Miller’s time as The Flash is likely over as well, given their recent legal troubles and violent behavior. With DC releasing prequel comics to Black Adam, it seems there is significant backstory to establish, hinting that the future of the DCEU may very well go through the Shazam! and Black Adam films.
