Cute Fantasy Fan-Favorite Manga Gets Anime Adaptation

Secrets of the Silent Witch focuses on a witch named Monica Everett. She’s incredibly powerful, able to defeat legendary dragons on her own and use magic without having to chant a single word. 

What many people don’t know about Monica is that she’s just as shy as she is strong. The reason she’s able to cast spells without saying anything is because she fears speaking in public. Also, while she may be powerful, her confidence is non-existent. 

Because of her strength, she’s sent on a mission to guard a prince. Now, she has to fight evil forces and deal with the terrors of potentially talking to others regularly. 

Though it sounds like a somewhat ridiculous premise or like Bocchi the Rock! in a fantasy setting, Secrets of the Silent Witch is actually quite a lot of fun, at least in the manga and light novels.

It’s set in a school, where Monica follows the prince, and so she’s always surrounded by people. 

Despite the fun, Secrets of the Silent Witch isn’t only silly. There are some pretty exciting fights and magic use that looked great in the manga. If done right, it could make for some stunning scenes in the anime. 

Secrets of the Silent Witch is an adaptation based on a light novel series of the same name written by Matsuri Isora. The series first started in 2020, with physical editions including illustrations and a manga version released in 2021.

As of February there are eight volumes of Secrets of the Silent Witch. Though it’s fairly obscure in the West, it’s a big hit in Japan. In 2023, it was ranked fourth in 2023 the tankobon (light novels officially published instead of published by chapter or online) category in 2023 by Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! which is a light novel guidebook by Takarajimasha. 

The adaptation was announced during the Aniplex x Kadokawa Animation Festival. While Secrets of the Silent Witch was confirmed to be turned into an anime, information including most of the cast, the release date, and the staff were not yet revealed. 

However, there was one cast member for Secrets of the Silent Witch unveiled. Saya Aizawa (Jobless Reincarnation) will play Monica Everett, the main character in the series. 

To hype up the reveal, the Secrets of the Silent Witch light novel illustrator Nanna Fujimi released a visual for the announcement on X. The image shows Monica standing at the window, book in hand. She’s reflected in the window as well, but wearing a hooded cape. 

To celebrate the exciting news, the illustrator for the manga adaptation of Secrets of the Silent Witch, Tobi Tana, also had some artwork to share, along with a message on X. The illustration is of Monica as well, putting a ribbon in her hair.
