Sebastian Stan will star in a new Marvel Cinematic Universe series centered on Bucky Barnes, the World War II hero turned Hydra assassin turned one half of a buddy duo with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. According to our trusted and proven sources, the Pam & Tommy star is the latest MCU actor to get his own series, which presumably will stream on Disney+ alongside shows like WandaVision and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. While there are few details available about the upcoming Sebastian Stan show, it is safe to assume it will pick up after the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Thunderbolts.

Aside from animated appearances as an alternate Bucky Barnes in Marvel’s What If…?, Sebastian Stan was last seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe attending a cookout with Anthony Mackie and his community. Even among characters in the MCU, Bucky Barnes has had a pretty rough go of things, so it was nice to see the character finally managing to adjust to something approximating a normal civilian life. However, Sebastian Stan is set to star in the upcoming Thunderbolts film, which means that one way or the other, he is going to be back in action.

Although he has not been the central focus of his own story to date, Sebastian Stan has actually had one of the longest tenures of any actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He first appeared as Steve Rogers’s (Chris Evans) best friend/older brother figure in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, where, true to Marvel Comics lore, he was presumed dead in a final mission. Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes returned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, in which it was revealed he had survived, been captured by Hydra, cybernetically enhanced, and brainwashed into serving as the world’s deadliest assassin.

Sebastian Stan’s longevity was explained as part of his being put into suspended animation by Hydra between missions, though he did not seem to have the same sensation of being a man out of time as his old comrade Steve Rogers. He has since been rehabilitated by Wakandan scientists and appears to be of stable mind, but his future adventures alongside the Thunderbolts team could very well threaten that hard-fought sanity.

According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Sebastian Stan will act as the de facto leader of the Thunderbolts in the upcoming film, a role which many had assumed would go to Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova. In all likelihood, the team will be caught between the warring influences of Harrison Ford’s President Thaddeus Ross and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, so it will be interesting to see where that leaves Sebastian Stan.

The solo Sebastian Stan series will most likely take place after Thunderbolts, so we will expect to see it sometime in 2025 or further out. We look forward to seeing how Bucky gets put through the wringer this time.
