When Disney decided to name the first nine episodes of Star Wars the “Skywalker Saga,” saying this saga was finally coming to an end, it seemed like we had seen the last of Luke Skywalker. Yet with new television series, spinoffs and potential new films, it looks like we might not have seen the end of Luke Skywalker. One new rumor is saying that Skywalker might return to Star Wars in the future, but this time, the iconic character will be played by Sebastian Stan.

We Got This Covered is reporting that gossip entertainment writer Daniel Richtman has said that Luke Skywalker could be coming back, but this time with Captain America: The Winter Soldier actor Sebastian Stan as the legendary Jedi. Richtman says, “Lucasfilm changed their minds. Instead of de-ageing Mark Hamill they decided with Hamill’s approval to cast Sebastian Stan in the role of young Luke for future projects.”

Mark Hamill has already said he’s done playing Luke Skywalker, stating that his end was in Rise of the Skywalker. While plenty of time passed between Return of the Jedi and when we next saw Skywalker in The Force Awakens, it’s unclear what project exactly Sebastian Stan would be playing Skywalker in. There has been some speculation that Luke Skywalker could appear in The Mandalorian, but considering Richtman doesn’t say what his proof is, or where he heard this rumor from, Star Wars fans maybe shouldn’t hold their breath.

However, Sebastian Stan has shown interest in the part before. At an appearance at the Rhode Island Comic-Con back in 2017, Stan said, “I just want to say here that anytime anyone would like to call me and ask me about Luke Skywalker, I’d be very happy.” While Stan would almost certainly make time to be only the second actor ever to play the live-action Luke Skywalker, it seems like Stan already has his hands full with another major Disney property.

Sebastian Stan already plays Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as part of a nine-film deal. Stan will be appearing in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is scheduled for a 2021 release. While it’s not sure what Bucky’s part in the upcoming Phase Four would be, it has been assumed that considering he’s the star of his own series now, he might be a more prominent part of this next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Theoretically, Sebastian Stan could make a cameo as Luke Skywalker, but any plans further than that might be a stretch. It would be a big ask for Disney to not only want Stan to play one of their newly prominent heroes, but also play such a major part in the Star Wars universe. With pretty much every new character showing up in The Mandalorian leading to rumors of spinoffs, casting Stan as Skywalker would surely lead to plenty of rumors that wouldn’t be viable considering how much the actor is already doing in other Disney properties.

Even though Sebastian Stan would be a nice casting choice for Luke Skywalker, there’s simply not enough evidence to believe that Disney is going back to that well already, especially considering they said the Skywalker Saga was closed not even a year ago. A small cameo in The Mandalorian could be fun, but almost seems too frivolous an addition when considering Disney has already supposedly closed the book on Luke Skywalker.
