Scream 7 Is Happening With Happy Death Day’s Christopher Landon Directing
The residents of Woodsboro better get ready, because Ghostface is coming back—again—for Scream 7. While the plot and cast are yet to be determined, we do know that Christopher Landon, who is best known for his film Happy Death Day, is set to direct, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The exciting news comes after Scream VI hit theaters in March, where it earned high praise from fans of the long-standing franchise.
Radio Silence, the directing team beind Scream V and Scream VI, is stepping away, and Chirstopher Landon is taking over for Scream 7.
The Scream franchise kicked off with its first film back in 1996, where it shocked audiences with the death of A-list celebrity Drew Barrymore in the first few minutes of the film. Since then, there have been five additional films, each featuring a new killer (or killers) who have donned the black cloak and Ghostface mask to kill anyone who steps in their way.
In 2022, the franchise was revived by Radio Silence (filmmaking team Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett). The creative duo brought the Scream movies into the modern day while successfully paying homage to the previous films, mostly by giving the characters a self-awareness about how horror movies work. While Radio Silence will step down for Scream 7 to work on their own original horror movie, they will still serve as executive producers of the new film.
Sliding into the director’s chair for Scream 7 will be Christopher Landon, a horror fan who seems more than ready to take on a new Scream movie. The experienced filmmaker has directed movies like the horror comedies Freaky and Happy Death Day (and its sequel Happy Death Day 2U), and most recently directed We Have a Ghost, which premiered on Netflix in February. Additionally, he has written several Paranormal Activity films and the hilarious Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.
Scream 7 is in great hands with Christopher Landon, the director of Happy Death Day, Freaky, and We Have a Ghost.
While the cast of Scream 7 has not been released yet, we anticipate that the Core Four (Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding) will make their return to the franchise. We also would not be surprised if cast members playing surviving characters from earlier films, like Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and Hayden Panettiere made their return as well. The jury is out on whether or not the ghost of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) will make an appearance in the new film.
Jenna Ortega, who has been a lead character in the past two films, Scream and Scream VI, might be caught up in several other projects. The Wednesday star has become the new Scream Queen, popping up in major horror movies like X, Studio 666, and the upcoming Beetlejuice 2, so we hope she will still have time to appear in Scream 7.

With Christopher Landon taking the reins of the new film, it will be interesting to see who the new killer (or killers) will be. Typically, Ghostface terrorizes those who are related to the original Woodsboro crew, like Sidney Prescott and Billy Loomis, but the franchise may have reached dead ends with these characters. But maybe the new Scream will bring the franchise favorite killer, Stu (Matthew Lillard), back from the dead.
While we anxiously wait for production to begin on Scream 7, we’ll leave you with one question: What’s your favorite scary movie?
