Scream 6 Chilling Footage Shows Ghostface Hunting Jenna Ortega In New York City
Anyone old enough to remember the Scream horror franchise in its original version will note some simple tropes: an attractive female lead, masked psycho killer, and seemingly endless bloody stabbings. While the original movie of the series turned the slasher genre on its head in a small town, Paramount Pictures is taking its masked psycho killer to the Big Apple in the latest installment. Scream 6 has just released a new teaser trailer showing us the action.
The trailer does lead to rather interesting questions about how this will a different kind of Scream movie. Here’s what we know so far based solely on the trailer. The survivors of the Scream (2022) reboot: Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding), Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) made their way to New York City to start fresh and probably deal with a good amount of PTSD and survivors guilt.
It’s clearly Halloween night with a mass assortment of “spooky” costumes sardine-packed into a subway car. The gang of survivors is clearly on edge as the lights flicker in the cabin. Out of the crowd, the masked killer shows his iconic ghoul mask. Even though his fixed expression, it’s clear he’s out for blood.
The lights go out. Jasmin Savoy Brown stands petrified against the cabin’s window. The lights flicker back on and the masked killer appears only an inch away from her face, holding her mouth closed from a blood-curdling scream (no pun intended) and the trailer ends.
Based on the tagline and trailer there are several possibilities one could make about the plot of Scream 6. The first, based on the fact that the main gang isn’t wearing any form of costume, is simple. They aren’t celebrating Halloween this night. Second, the Ghostface killer is going to use the cover of a mega-city like New York to play a devilish and most likely overly gory game of cat and mouse to hunt down the remaining survivors in the big city.
While there are these possibilities, there are several questions. One, will Scream 6 see the same breakout success that Scream (2022) did, making over $140 million according to Box Office Mojo and being one of the most streamed horror movies of recent times? Or will this installment fall victim to sophomore syndrome?
Two, (spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the reboot) who is going to be the new Ghostface killer? Amber (Mikey Madison) and Richie (Jack Quaid) were outed as the killers in the previous movie and then killed. On top of that, Gale refused to report on the killings so unless the other media outlets were able to factually report on Ghostface, the chance of it being a copycat killer is unlikely.
Lastly, how will the location change to New York change the style of the movie? The California suburbs have been the haunting ground of Ghostface and provided a more societal ‘these things don’t happen here’ style of horror movie. Crime, violence, and murder happen frequently in New York. There’s a reason that the Scream director, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin is also directing the sequel to Escape from New York.
Only time will tell if Scream 6 will continue to carry the torch of the franchise and if Jenna Ortega will survive and defeat the Ghostface killer once again on March 10th, 2023.
