Wholock: See Doctor Who And Sherlock Holmes Combined Into A Perfect Series

By Brent McKnight | Updated

Can the greatest detective our world has ever known solve the mystery of man from another? Or, more to the matter at hand, can he unravel the mystery of an alien Time Lord with two hearts?

That’s the question posited in this fan-made video that crosses the long-running British sci-fi adventure Doctor Who with Sherlock, the popular BBC interpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes.

Put them together. What do you have? An ingenious video called Wholock, that’s what.

This is definitely a timely addition to the pop culture landscape. The super nerdy mash-up appeared right between the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor,” and the holiday special, “The Time of the Doctor,” which saw the departure of Matt Smith’s Doctor, and the arrival of Peter Capaldi’s.

If you’re into non-sci-fi things, you may also have noticed that Sherlock returns for a third for season this January.

Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) has solved every case he’s been faced with, except one. Who is this mysterious man known only as the Doctor, who shows up at important events throughout history?

As he contemplates this conundrum, pouring over and over the every scrap of evidence he can find, he receives an interesting new client, the Doctor himself.

Obviously, he’s rather awed by his first time in the TARDIS, and you can see him trying to wrap his brain around the fact that it is bigger on the inside. Watson (Martin Freeman), on the other hand, is understandably concerned. After all, his friend and boss just climbed into a big blue police box and vanished into thin air.

What a team-up. Just think of all the adventures they could have. How would Sherlock react to his first Dalek encounter? Would the detective and his legendary intellect be able to help the Time Lord out of the many sticky situations he regularly finds himself in? The possibilities are mind-boggling.

YouTube user John Smith put together this video. Here is the synopsis he includes with the video:

Months after an encounter with a mysterious ‘Doctor’, Sherlock becomes obsessed with discovering more about this impossible man… until the man makes an unexpected return.

Wholock is a damn good time, and one hell of a ‘what if’ scenario. Like I said, it came a perfect time, too, just when everyone is especially hyped up about both Doctor Who and Sherlock.
