Watch The Final Divergent Series: Insurgent Trailer Grow Beyond All Control

By Brent McKnight | Updated

Divergent, the adaptation of the first book in Veronica Roth’s best selling dystopian young adult series, didn’t exactly set the world on fire with critical praise, but it made more than enough money to ensure that we’ll be seeing the remainder of the trilogy on the big screen. Sure, it wasn’t Hunger Games money, but not many movies without the words Marvel or Transformers in front of them do that. Part two, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, is less than a month away—you can officially buy your tickets starting today—and Summit Entertainment has released the final trailer.

If you’ve been paying attention, or even just know what the whole story is all about, there isn’t much here that will come as any great surprise. There’s lots of running through the woods, lots of fighting, and, of course, tons of angsty teen romance, which is mostly made up of deep stares and heavy breathing. There’s also a healthy dose of those crazy, fever-dream-looking visuals that you have to imagine occur when heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prios (Shailene Woodley) goes on one of her internal journeys.

In the wake of the first movie, Insurgent finds Tris, her hunky boyfriend Four (Theo James), and others, like her brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort) and Peter (Miles Teller), as refugees after fleeing the post-apocalyptic ruins of future Chicago. They’re being hunted by Jeanine (Kate Winslet) and her power-mad cronies, and they must find out why Tris’ family sacrificed themselves, what the hell is going on, and, most importantly, what exactly makes Divergents like Tris so damn dangerous to this oversimplified world. As all of this is going on, they’re also tooling up for war and have to build alliances and find allies, which leads them to team up with the factionless, who appear to be way more than just the sad homeless folks portrayed in the first film.

Robert Schwentke (RED, R.I.P.D.) takes over the directing duties from Neil Burger, who helmed the first film, and will reportedly be back for the two-part finale, Allegiant. Because that’s how things go now, the last book will be split into two installments and drop a year apart. The Divergent Series: Insurgent opens everywhere on March 20, while Allegiant Part 1 opens next year and Allegiant Part 2 hits in 2017.
