See The Abandoned Stargate SG-1: Unleashed Video Game
Since the 2011 cancellation of Stargate Universe, it’s been a lean time for fans of the franchise. And while I’m afraid I don’t have good news about any return to the big or small screens, you will get the chance to return to the Stargate universe in a slightly more interactive way.
Check out the cinematic teaser trailer for Stargate SG-1: Unleashed, the game that was developed and then completely abandoned. The franchise has had many starts and stops over the years.
While the Stargate SG-1: Unleashed trailer could pass for a triple-A console/PC game, Unleashed was instead an episodic adventure game from MGM and Arkalis. It was available for iOS and Android devices.
It featured an original story with the voices of the main Stargate SG-1 cast like Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Christopher Judge reprising their roles from the original series.
Did Stargate fans feel a little sting of glee at the sight of familiar faces from SG-1 (albeit in digital form)? Undoubtedly.
Stargate SG-1: Unleashed‘s story revolved around the SG-1 team dealing with a new Goa’uld villain named Sekhmet, who was inadvertently released and plotted revenge against Earth. It was planned to unfold over three “episodes” or chapters, the beginning of which you see above.
The first episode of Stargate SG-1: Unleashed was released in March 2013, with the second episode following in November 2013 for iOS only. But the bad news was that Arkalis Interactive went out of business shortly after that, ending this addition to the Stargate universe.
In true gut-punch fashion, fans didn’t even get to conclude and wrap up the Stargate SG-1: Unleashed story. Remember what I said about starts and stops when it comes to Stargate? This was just another sad chapter.
The Stargate franchise began in 1994 with the hit sci-fi film Stargate. That spawned the long-running television series Stargate SG-1, which aired for 10 seasons from 1997 to 2007. SG-1 followed the adventures of a U.S. Air Force team exploring the galaxy via an ancient alien portal device called the Stargate. This is where Stargate SG-1: Unleashed draws its story.
The show’s success led to the spin-off series Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, as well as several direct-to-DVD movies continuing the SG-1 storyline.
Will we ever see a true return to the Stargate universe? It looks more and more unlikely with each passing year.
