Simon Pegg is a true friend of the nerd. To prove it, he took to Twitter to drop some exciting news for fans eagerly awaiting any new Star Trek Into Darkness reports. After the first apocalyptic-looking poster appeared earlier this week, people have been practically foaming at the mouth for any additional information. And we’ll get more, this week, Thursday to be exact.

Here’s what Pegg had to say, in short form:

So far we’ve seen a total of three frames from the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the Star Trek franchise (not counting Zachary Quinto’s totally real clip on Conan). It’ll be nice to actually lay eyes on a something more substantial. Abrams is notorious for keeping things under wraps, so who knows exactly how much there will be to look at, but as long as there is more than an eighth of a second of film, that’s something.

And we still have that nine-minute preview of Into Darkness showing with IMAX screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to look forward to. The film doesn’t hit theaters until May 17, 2013, but starting this month we should begin to get a somewhat clearer picture.

Here is the official synopsis:

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

That’s a promising, but vague story description. It sounds like it says a lot of things, but in reality it poses more questions than it answers. We’re still not any closer to knowing who the villain is, and probably won’t for some time. [We do some ideas, however. -Ed.] One thing that is apparent, however, is that there should be plenty of action waiting for Kirk and company in Star Trek Into Darkness.
