Script From Star Trek’s Unfilmed Fourth Season Being Shot
It seems hard to believe now but at the time, NBC didn’t have much faith in Star Trek when it ran at the end of the 60s. The show only managed to stay on the air for three seasons thanks to massive, never before seen fan campaigns.
A fourth season was almost out of the question. That doesn’t mean, however, that Roddenberry and his team weren’t hoping for one and did in fact have several scripts ready to go for that fourth Trek season which never happened.
One of those scripts, titled “He Walked Among Us” is now being filmed thanks to a group of devoted fans. If you’re one of them, you’ve probably heard of Star Trek: Phase II, it was a web series in which new Trek stories were being shot and told… some of them even using original cast members like George Takei.
Here’s their take on that Phase II, “He Walked Among Us” script, titled “World Enough And Time”…
Star Trek: The New Voyages’ work was so good, they were nominated for prestigious Hugo and Nebula awards.
“He Walked Among Us” was written by Norman Spinrad who also wrote the filmed Trek episode “Doomsday Machine”. The screenplay was thought lost forever until just a few weeks ago when a fan surfaced with a copy and sold it to Spinrad. Spinrad has since made it available to purchase on Amazon
The story involves some pretty controversial religious themes which is, in part, why they never got around to filming it. Star Trek was willing to tackle heavy topics like racism, but even today religion is a pretty hot potato.
