Robert Pattinson Wanted To Play The Worst Star Wars Character

Who likes Jar Jar Binks? Answer: No one (we don’t think). Even among the few Star Wars fans you encounter who don’t hate the bumbling Gungan, no one actually likes him. Right? Well, apparently, George Lucas’ greatest mistake has at least one fan. That’s right, Robert Pattinson is on record as having said he would have play Jar Jar. Batman (and literally anything else) is better.

Back in 2012, when the Star Wars sequel trilogy wasn’t starting to kick into production and rumors were flying, Robert Pattinson was asked if he’d accept a role in any future excursions to a galaxy far, far away. He replied, “In Star Wars? Oh, absolutely. In a heartbeat.”

Ok, fine enough. At the time, it wasn’t offboard to say you wanted to be in Star Wars. The landscape hadn’t been oversaturated by any means, there was no streaming series. Live-action was movies or bust. But here’s where things get interesting, and a little sad. As a follow-up question, Robert Pattinson was asked, even if the character he was asked to play is Jar Jar?

His response is disheartening for any grown-ass adult. He said, “I actually kind of like Jar Jar. I don’t understand what the big deal is about Jar Jar.”

The good news on a Robert Pattinson Jar Jar casting? Well, at least then Jar Jar wouldn’t be an obnoxious, vaguely racist caricature.

Sure, a mopey, messy-haired naval-gazer isn’t that much better, but in this case it’s hard to get any worse. The vibe would have certainly been, well, different. That’s for sure.

It’s also worth remembering that back in 2012, Robert Pattinson’s star shone a little different than it does now. He was coming out of the Twilight trilogy and working to take on roles that wouldn’t box him in as Edward Cullen. He was in Water for Elephants, David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis and Map to the Stars.

Dude was trying to break free. Jar Jar would have certainly been a look. Vampire dreamboat Gungan more like it.

Robert Pattinson in The Batman

Robert Pattinson didn’t take any Star Wars roles during the sequel trilogy or after, and it doesn’t look like that franchise is going to be in the cards for the actor. Makes sense considering he’s got a comic book franchise to look after. Playing Bruce Wayne/ Vengeance in The Batman franchise was certainly a better choice.

And it’s also unlikely we will see Jar Jar Binks in live-action form ever again. The reception wasn’t amazing (to say the least) the first time around. Never say never I suppose, but it just doesn’t seem like the franchise has any reason to bring him back into the fold. Unless, of course, Robert Pattinson was going to make good on the claim. Then maybe we’d see him again.
