Robert Kirkman on What’s Ahead For The Governor On The Walking Dead

Governor

One of the most popular fan complaints about The Walking Dead this season is that the Governor (David Morrissey) isn’t evil enough when compared to his comic book counterpart. Morrissey’s portrayal of the leader of the gated safe haven, Woodbury, is weaker than what some fans expected. But that’s quickly going to turn around when The Walking Dead returns in February.

The creator and executive producer of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, is letting fans of his comic book know that the Governor’s maniacal rage will be in full swing when the series returns. We’ve already had hints of the Governor’s madness at the end of the mid-season finale, but that was just a taste of what we’ll see in the season’s latter half. Kirkman reveals:

We haven’t seen him activated to the extent that he’s going to be activated in the back half of the season. He’s going to be much more engaged and a little bit more aware of the threat that the prison represents. He’s going to be on the warpath.

At the crossroads in season three, we’ve seen one leader — the Governor — become more deranged, and we’ll also see another one — Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) — go in the opposite direction as he questions the effectiveness of his leadership. After all…

*SPOILER ALERT*

…his wife just died this season. Kirkman says:

He’s a person who’s bearing the weight of everyone’s survival on his shoulders, and I think that’s become a little bit unbearable. He’s certainly spiraling out of control. And now he’s starting to see [dead people]. It’s definitely a real problem.

The mid-season finale ended with Merle (Michael Rooker) and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) re-united after three and a half seasons apart. But in the cliffhanger, the brothers are pitted against each other in a post-apocalyptic death match. This wasn’t the family reunion the brothers were hoping for, and Merle may not make it out alive.

The Walking Dead returns to finish out season three on February 10th on AMC. Check out a quick glimpse of the upcoming episode, “The Suicide King,” below.
