Ready Or Not TRON 3 Is Still Happening, Details Here

TRONAt the end of Joseph Kosinski’s 2010 TRON: Legacy you walk away with the definite feeling that we’re in for more. Most people think of the movie as a total bomb, though it made decent money ($400 million globally, $172 million domestically, against a $170 million budget), so it was only a matter of time before we got more, and after years of rumblings, now this definitely appears to be happening.

A report from VanCity Buzz, a local, Vancouver, BC-based paper, TRON 3, or TRON: Legacy 2 if you want to think of it like that, is getting ready to shoot in Vancouver this fall. After this news started circulating, a number of other outlets jumped all over their sources, and what they’ve heard corroborates this. Cameras are slated to roll on October 5.

According to the reports, star Garrett Hedlund is attached to the project to reprise his role as Sam Flynn, son of Jeff Bridges video game designer Kevin Flynn from the 1982 original. There’s no word whether the elder of these two will be back, but you have to imagine that if he was they would be shouting that from the rooftops. Then again, they could use the creepy CGI version from Legacy.

There’s also no mention of Olivia Wilde being involved. Even though she isn’t listed here, it’s difficult to imagine that any continuance of this story is going to go forward without her Quorra character returning to the party. Then again, there’s also a great deal of time between now and October, so there is space to make a deal with Wilde, Bridges, and whoever the hell else they want to get on board.

TRON wasn’t exactly a box office juggernaut in 1982, but it still managed to become a cult classic and an important pop culture artifact over the intervening years, though the sequel certainly didn’t have such an impact. Visually it is a stunning movie to look at, and the action does, admittedly kick a great deal of ass from time to time, but as far as story and characters go, it’s totally vapid and empty.

That’s kind of Kosinski’s jam, however, as his only other directing job, the Tom Cruise-starring Oblivion, suffers from the same problems. You can rest assured that TRON 3 will be a pretty movie to look at, but this time around lets hope that there is an actual story with some depth or interesting characters lurking below all of the eye candy.

What do you think, are you ready for more TRON or should they wait another 28 years before making another one?
