The Messengers Trailer Fights To Heal The World And Save Humanity

By Brent McKnight | Updated

This has been a big couple of days for The CW. They network renewed a handful of their shows, including The 100 and The Flash; they announced their midseason lineup, which includes the debut of iZombie; and now they released this extended trailer for The Messengers, which offers our first look at the upcoming series.

There’s a weird, but potentially cool mix of influences here. You get hints of alien invasion, there are some apocalyptic overtones, supernatural elements, maybe the devil, good versus evil, and more. It has an almost The Stand kind of vibe to it, with a bunch of strangers having to come together to battle a mysterious sinister figure and prevent Armageddon.

The action begins when scientist Vera Buckley watches an object fall to the Earth in the middle of the New Mexico desert—it apparently lands in the same spot where the first nuclear bomb was tested. Coincidence? When it hits, an explosion sends out a shockwave that stops Vera’s heart. She, however, is not the only one affected, as there are four others who essentially die and come back to life. There’s Erin Calder, a young mother with an abusive ex-husband; Joshua Silburn, Jr., a second-generation televangelist preacher; Peter Moore, a bullied high school student who has had enough, and Raul Garcia, an undercover federal agent trying to get away from the vicious drug cartel he infiltrated.

They all collapse as the shockwave from the blast washes over them, and when they revive, they have powers, like strength the ability to heal. And they’re going to need these new abilities to deal with “The Man,” a shadowy figure who shows up naked, like the Terminator, and is too handsome not to be evil. He offers the newly named “Angels of the Apocalypse” the things they want the most, but there are some serious strings attached, and they’ll have to come together to prevent the Apocalypse. Shit is getting all kinds of Book of Revelation, and it’s unclear if they’re the source or the cure.

The MessengersThis is all a lot to take in, but this trailer actually does a decent job of introducing the characters, setting up the basic idea behind The Messengers, and giving you the lay of the land. This looks super melodramatic, but also like it could wind up being a decent amount of fun if they handle it right. Last we heard, Battlestar Galactica’s Jamie Bamber had joined the cast in the recurring role of Vincent Plowman, though we don’t see Lee Adama show up anywhere in this four-minute trailer.

The Messengers stars Shantel VanSanten, Jon Fletcher, Sofia Black-D’Elia, JD Pardo, Joel Courtney, Anna Diop, Craig Frank, and Diogo Morgado, and premieres on The CW on Friday, April 10.
