As casting begins for Marvel’s upcoming superhero space epic, Guardians of the Galaxy, director James Gunn has come forward to dispel rumors that they are close to filling the role of the Guardians leader Star-Lord. In true James Gunn fashion, he took his plea to the Internet, but since posting to his Facebook account, the post has since been removed.

Earlier this week, casting reports narrowed the candidates down to two likely  front-runners for the lead role of Star-Lord: Cloud Atlas‘ Jim Sturgess and Chuck‘s Zachary Levi. According to Gunn, however, those rumors are not true. Here’s what Gunn posted to his Facebook page:

Almost everything in that Variety article on the Guardians of the Galaxy casting (and all the following articles based on it) was/is completely inaccurate. Just for the record.

The number of actors auditioning for the coveted role have ranged from Garrett Hedlund, Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, James Marsden, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne, Sullivan Stapleton, and Jim Sturgess. But when Zachary Levi’s name popped up in casting reports, it was very surprising to some, considering he will also appear in the upcoming Thor: The Dark World in 2013. If Levi were to be cast as the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, he would be played two different characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s not impossible, but it does seem unlikely.

The next big question is why Gunn’s Facebook post was removed. Maybe Marvel is close to casting the Star-Lord role and Gunn wanted to throw people off the scent. Or perhaps Marvel made him take down his Facebook post because of Gunn’s recent history of Internet controversy.

Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters on August 1, 2014.
