Interstellar Drops Six New Stills And The Stars Share Their Impressions

By Brent McKnight | Updated

InterstellarChristopher Nolan’s Interstellar is ever so gradually pulling back the curtain. We’re talking centimeter by centimeter here (maybe even millimeter by millimeter), but we’re getting more and more information in miniscule, less than bite sized chunks. Over the last week we’ve seen posters that show what appear to be various worlds that may be explored, Nolan himself referred to Interstellar as a mirror of his last non-Batman movie Inception, and now we’ve got a handful of new stills from the upcoming sci-fi epic. Two of the stars are even sharing their two cents on the film.

Not having seen the movie, or really knowing much about it (there’s not much to know at this point), we are aware that it takes place both on Earth and in space. Global climate change has progressed beyond the point where it can be reversed, and as such humanity needs to look for a new planet to call home. A band of intrepid explorers, led by a reluctant Matthew McConaughey, leave Earth and travel through a newly discovered wormhole in the hopes of finding somewhere we can plant our collective flag.

InterstellarWe don’t know how the story skews, Earth versus space, but it appears they go to multiple planets, which you imagine has to take up a fair amount of time. Either way, this collection of images from Empire (yesterday we saw alternating covers of the magazine that hits news stands tomorrow) definitely strays towards the space side of things. They show off the adventurers on the surface of an alien world, you get to see the interior and exterior of their trusty spaceship, and you even see Nolan working with his actors, among other things.

InterstellarOne thing we do know about Interstellar is that it is going to be big and sweeping and epic in scope. Nolan doesn’t go small, and he’s going to be using a lot of IMAX, which means it’s going to be even bigger (the idea of Nolan using IMAX cameras and telling a space-based story is more than enough to get us to watch a movie, any movie). McConaughey says, “This is the grandest adventure I think any of us will ever see on film. This is the biggest film I’ve ever been a part of. This is one of the biggest films anyone’s ever been a part of.”

InterstellarFrom what little we know, this is exactly the kind of sci-fi film we’ve been waiting for, full of big, important themes and ideas. McConaughey’s costar Anne Hathaway, who appears to play one of his fellow space travellers, says, “I am so excited for the world to receive this film, because there’s going to be a new conversation I believe will happen because of it. It’s not a dry, science-based film. It has a pulse. It’s got blood in its veins.”

InterstellarInterstellar also stars Jessica Chastain, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, Wes Bentley, Bill Irwin, Mackenzie Foy, Topher Grace, and David Gyasi, and opens everywhere November 7.
