Farscape Creator Confirms Movie Spin-Off Is In The Works

While it might not have demonstrated as many lives as Futurama — not yet, at least — Farscape has definitely proven itself to be a hardier show than any of us could have guessed. Although the show was contracted to run five seasons on what was then still the Sci-Fi Channel, the network canceled it at the end of the fourth — leaving the show on a horribly cruel cliffhanger episode that bore the all too apt title of “Bad Timing.” Thankfully, the weeping, wailing, and blind rage of the fans earned the show a coda: the 2004 miniseries Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars, which gave the story a proper (albeit occasionally tragic) wrap-up. And while it was awesome to see the show get a worthy ending, it was still sad to admit that the miniseries would likely be the last we’d see of Farscape on our screens. But, to borrow a quote from a different space franchise: never tell me the odds. It turns out the rumors are true: a Farscape movie is indeed in the works.
This past February, If.com.au reported that former Farscape writer Justin Monjo was penning a script for a new feature film spin-off of the series. During a panel at WonderCon Anaheim this past Saturday, O’Bannon told the crowd that “We are, in fact, in the script stage of a Farscape feature.” Man, I can only imagine how much craziness broke out in that audience. Short of Joss Whedon announcing more Firefly, I can’t think of another resurrection that would be more exciting. O’Bannon went on to tell fans that the Farscape movie is still in the very early stages, so it’ll be a while before we get to catch up with John, Aeryn, and the rest.
So who do we have to thank for this unlikely third incarnation of Farscape? Executive producer Brian Henson, who O’Bannon described as a “dog with a bone” who “would not give up on it.” Memo to self: buy Brian Henson a beer at some point.
The Farscape movie will pick up not only after The Peacekeeper Wars, but after the events of the BOOM! Studios comics, which dropped the Moya crew into an intergalactic war even more dire than the tussles between the Peacekeepers and Scarrans. It also explored the strange, reality-bending powers demonstrated by John and Aeryn’s son, D’Argo, and those powers will apparently play a major part of the movie. As revealed in the original story about the movie, the Farscape movie will pick up with John and Aeryn living in hiding on Earth. Unfortunately, there are those who would like nothing more than to exploit the now 19-year-old D’Argo’s mysterious abilities, and it seems the Crichton family is destined to return to outer space for one more adventure.
