We know that J.J. Abrams ended up taking the directorial helm for the Star Wars sequel trilogies, starting with The Force Awakens and then finishing it off with The Rise of Skywalker with Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi sandwiched in between.

But when it was first announced that J.J. Abrams would be taking over the franchise, it was tough to be patient and fans found themselves watching the clock and counting down calendar days until the movie hit the big screen.

That led to fans speculating with a J.J. Abrams Star Wars movie would look like and, well, getting in on the action themselves.

That meant Gavin Chin creating a J.J. Abrams-style trailer for The Empire Strikes Back. Please hold all “Needs more lens flare,” comments until the end of the feature. Check it out.

First, it’s almost two minutes long, which is nearly two minutes longer than Abrams likes to show people. And nobody was screaming about having to go back to someplace, but the darkly ominous tone and in-your-face music cues are spot-on.

Though, at the time, we suspected in J.J. Abrams‘ version, there would be a secret box somewhere that the characters would be trying to find, learning a little bit about themselves during the journey, instead of all that “space wars” junk. Also, nothing bad would actually happen to the good guys.

In the end, this wasn’t too far off from the reality. J.J. Abrams did reset, to an extent, the Star Wars Universe with the first prequel trilogy movie. It was basically a welcome-back event for old fans and possibly new enthusiasts.

Of course, he had a heavy lift, needing to bring back some old faces while also introducing Daisy Ridley as the new lead in Rey and creating a universe that paid homage to the old while ushering in the new. It had to be nostalgic, but not overly so.

There were fans who didn’t appreciate the J.J. Abrams version of Star Wars, no doubt. That was basically to be expected from the jump. Would the Empire Strikes Back version of a J.J. Abrams been a better look? The above trailer certainly makes it seem so.
