The idea of a famous director helming a single scene or shot in a movie that’s not their own is not a new one. For instance, in 2005, Quentin Tarantino directed one scene in Robert Rodriguez’s film adaptation of Frank Miller’s Sin City. So when Edgar Wright (The World’s End) tweeted a photo of himself directing a shot in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Trek fans everywhere rejoiced at the idea that Wright could be the right director for Star Trek 3.

In 2013, Edgar Wright teased his fans when he tweeted that he directed one shot in an upcoming summer movie. Although he didn’t reveal the film at the time, many of his fans believed that he directed a shot in Marvel’s Iron Man 3.

Edgar Wright was setting up to direct the first Ant-Man movie as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Two, so it was natural to think that he would’ve directed the end credits sequence in Iron Man 3. Edgar Wright instead revealed that he directed a shot in Star Trek Into Darkness.

The photo above showed Edgar Wright on the Star Trek Into Darkness set of Kronos, the Klingon home planet, with an IMAX camera.

We knew that Klingons would play a bigger role in Star Trek Into Darkness than they did in the first Star Trek reboot film (they were featured in a deleted scene). So we were on the lookout out for Edgar Wright’s directorial flourish when watching Star Trek Into Darkness.

Edgar Wright’s Star Trek Into Darkness scene ended up being one involving the portion with the Klingons when Spock, Uhura, and Kirk go down to the planet for the fight. It was directed in iMax.

Of course, this all led to fans thinking Edgar Wright was next in line for Star Trek 3 after J.J. Abrams left for Star Wars. But this didn’t end up being the case. It was a friendly gesture and nothing more.
