Back in 2013, there was brewing excitement about Legendary’s monster franchise reboot with the word that Godzilla was getting another movie. And there was hope this one would correct some of the mistakes made in the previous edition which just didn’t live up to the hype.

But even then there were problems with the Godzilla script and they had to call in some folks to help work out the kinks. Apparently, the studio just wasn’t confident with what they had. So it was David S. Goyer time. He had worked on the Blade trilogy as well as Dark Knight with Christopher Nolan. And was coming off working on Man of Steel with Zack Snyder. So it made sense that he could help.

The Godzilla reboot story was originally drafted by David Callaham and Max Borenstein has the screenplay credit. But David S. Goyer played a big part.

In an interview with Collider at the time, David S. Goyer discussed what went into rewriting the film for Gareth Edwards and Legendary Pictures. Given Goyer’s background in those aforementioned blockbuster genre movies, this made sense.

David S. Goyer said about his time helping to rewrite Godzilla, “[I was involved with Godzilla] a little bit. I mean I did three or four weeks of work on Godzilla, it wasn’t a page-one rewrite or anything like that. The term is ‘script doctoring,’ is what I did on it.”

David S. Goyer continued, “I did jump at the chance [to do it] but one of the reasons why I only did three weeks was because I was very busy. The good news/bad news about where I’m at in my career now is I get offered a lot of cool things and I can’t always work on them because my dance card’s often full. I’ve definitely had to — there’ve been some ones that have gotten away that I wish I could’ve worked on.”

Frank Darabont called the new Godzilla a “force of nature,” so obviously there was considerably excitement going into this movie. It was good to see that, at least when David S. Goyer got his hands on the Godzilla script, it wasn’t as bad as some suggested before the film went into production.

The Godzilla reboot featured actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston. Japanese actor Akira Takarada also made a cameo appearance in the new film.
