The Army of the 12 Monkeys (12 Monkeys)
While the central threat at the cold, futuristic heart of Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys actually has nothing to do with primates, they are still an antagonist within the film, because animal freedom groups are so damned annoying. As something of an anti-MacGuffin, the Army of the 12 Monkeys is the perfect cinematic villain: ambiguous, mysterious, and eventually the exact opposite of what you thought it would be. It proves that one person’s art is another person’s doodles, and vice versa. Plus, the group was led by Brad Pitt, who received his first Oscar nomination for the most maniacally unhinged performance of his career. Sci-fi films rarely get as complex as 12 Monkeys, and monkeys rarely cause this many time travel fuck-ups. It all evens out.
