Brie Larson Is No Longer Promoting The Marvels
Brie Larson and the other stars of The Marvels are not appearing on the film’s promotional tour because of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. The film, set to be released on November 10, is a crossover story that features Teyonah Parris as Captain Marvel’s estranged niece Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani, reprising her role as Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan, from the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series. These two Marvels get caught up with the original when they “become entangled” with the captain’s powers.
Stars of The Marvels, including Brie Larson, will not promote the upcoming film during the ongoing Hollywood strikes.
Brie Larson reprises her role as Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers, in this sequel to the hero’s eponymous 2019 debut. Ahead of the much-anticipated follow-up, Marvel Studios is charging ahead with a full press campaign, but they’re moving forward without their stars or any supporting cast members. There were interviews for the film with the trio of stars with EW and others, but they were all conducted before the strike.
Other people outside of the actors’ and writers’ guilds who were involved with the production are still participating in the promotion of the film.
At this point, though, Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani are all barred from doing any work to publicly promote studio projects, according to the rules of the strike. The strike withholds all labor by union members until a deal is struck with AMPTP, the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Doing press tours, promotion, and interviews are all part of actors’ contracts for films, and those contracts are presently in dispute.
The absence of Brie Larson and the film’s other stars doesn’t mean there’s no one to interview, even with the ongoing WGA strike in addition to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Other people outside of the actors’ and writers’ guilds who were involved with the production are still participating in the promotion of the film. This includes people like director Nia DaCosta, executive producer Mary Livanos, and composer Laura Karpman.
The Marvels is moving ahead as planned, despite concerns that it could be delayed without Brie Larson or other stars like Samuel L. Jackson promoting it. Disney is therefore going to keep up the planned promotional push ahead of the November release, perhaps banking on an end to the strikes before that time and a return of the movie’s stars to the press circuit.
It would be great to see the leads out promoting the film since they are the first all-women leading cast of any MCU film, but strikes are about sacrifices, and this will be one of them, at least for the present time.
Fans have been looking forward to Brie Larson’s next appearance as Captain Marvel, and Iman Vellani is sure to bring fans of her Ms. Marvel series to the theater. Vellani is a fan as well, which gives audiences a point of connection with her character, who is herself an avid admirer of the Marvel heroes. The Marvel star has been showing some tarnish lately, and Disney is hoping The Marvels will use some of its heroes’ light powers to make it shine again.
The Marvels Release Date
We’re hopeful that Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani will be promoting the film soon because we also hope for a fair resolution to the strike as soon as possible. But AMPTP leadership has so far seemed intractable, meaning this standoff could last for some time. As of now, The Marvels is set for a theatrical release on November 10, 2013.
