Boba Fett Miniseries Reportedly Starts Shooting Next Week

Boba Fett remains one of the most mysterious and intriguing characters in the entire Star Wars canon. While his story has been fleshed out in numerous tangential media like novels and comic books, the character has not gotten a lot of exploration in feature films or other cinematic avenues. The last good look we got at his story was in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones when he was still a child. However, a recent appearance in The Mandalorian has brought him back in a big way, and this new development is even bigger.
Deadline is reporting that a Boba Fett miniseries is planning to start filming as soon as next week before production gets underway on the third season of The Mandalorian. Combined with what we learned from the season premiere episode of The Mandalorian, it sounds like Boba Fett will not be featured too heavily in that show but might appear one more time to reclaim his iconic armor and then go off on his own adventures.
Maybe the most interesting possibility behind a Boba Fett miniseries would be how it would fill in the gap between Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and the first time we see the bounty hunter in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. Again, a lot of this story has played out, but it has all been in tie-in material that may not be accepted as canon. A cinematic look at Boba Fett’s life would permanently establish his backstory and would offer audiences some concrete answers to who this character is, what his values are, and why he has chosen the life of a bounty hunter.
This miniseries might also be how we learn about Boba Fett’s survival in the sarlacc pit. Leaving that open-ended in The Mandalorian could provide a big draw for people to check out the potential miniseries. Fans are going to watch the miniseries regardless of what it promises in terms of story, but more casual viewers might need a stronger hook after The Mandalorian has managed to take the familiar look of Boba Fett and change it into a unique character all its own.
It is very likely that this Boba Fett miniseries spawned out of the failed line of anthology films – originally subtitled A Star Wars Story – that Disney had hoped to start with Rogue One and Solo. Talk about a Boba Fett movie was moving forward during this development cycle. Chronicle director Josh Trank was attached to the project before departing. Then, Logan director James Mangold took over as the main creative force. It is unclear if any work from these projects will make their way into this newly announced miniseries.
Disney seems to be riding high off the success of The Mandalorian and the discovery of this Boba Fett miniseries seems to indicate that they feel very comfortable focusing a lot of Star Wars on their Disney+ streaming platform. There has not been an official announcement regarding this miniseries, but with the news now breaking, it probably won’t be too long before the Mouse House gives us confirmation.
