Alien: Romulus Brings Franchise Back To Its Sci-Fi Horror Roots, See The Evidence

By Douglas Helm | Updated

The new Alien: Romulus trailer just dropped, and it’s pretty awesome. If the tone and style of this trailer are what we can expect from the film, then the Alien franchise might just be back on track. It gives us the perfect tease of claustrophobic corridors, low lighting, and terrifying unknown forces that bring to mind the franchise’s space horror roots.

The Alien: Romulus trailer gives us a good look at the cast, along with lots of shots of the facehuggers terrorizing them. Of course, we also get a good look at a fully-grown Xenomorph. As always, the HR Giger-designed creatures are one of the scariest horror monsters put to screen, and hopefully, Romulus is going to put them to good use.

The Alien: Romulus trailer shows a group of space colonizers scavenging an abandoned space station when they cross paths with one of the most terrifying creatures in the universe.

The film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Fede Alvarez directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues. Original Alien director Ridley Scott returns to produce with Michael Pruss and Walter Hill.

Ridley Scott also directed and produced the most recent film entries to the franchise Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. These two films were highly divisive amongst fans, with the story focusing more on building the lore and the origin of the Xenomorphs rather than focusing on the horror sci-fi elements that made the original such a beloved classic. This promised a return to form in Alien: Romulus might be what fans need for the franchise to become as beloved as it once was, and thankfully, the trailer proves it’s going in the right direction.

What’s even more exciting for fans is that Alien: Romulus is just the beginning of a new era for the franchise.

Director Fede Alvarez has also said some promising things about his approach to the film, saying, “I really wanted to go back to the sheer horror of the first film, and to take those elements of thriller that ‘Aliens’ has, and ‘Alien 3’ has as well.” Based on the Alien: Romulus trailer, it does seem like Alvarez is giving fans the best of both worlds from the isolated and close-quarters horror from Alien and the more action-oriented bombast of Aliens. While Alien 3 has a bit more division amongst the fanbase, it still has more staying power than the ill-received prequels.

What’s even more exciting for fans is that the Alien: Romulus trailer is just the beginning of a new era for the franchise. Along with bringing the theatrical releases back to the franchise’s roots, we also have an Alien TV series on the way, written and directed by Noah Hawley (FX’s Fargo). Hawley’s show is a prequel to the original film, but he has already confirmed that the series will be more in line with the original film and essentially ignore the prequels.

There’s no official release date for Hawley’s series at this time, but it’s expected to air sometime in 2025. We won’t have to wait nearly as long for Alien: Romulus, as the film is set to hit screens later this summer.
