Elysium (Pandorum)
The 2009 sci-fi/horror flick Pandorum tried to do a lot of things and ended up not doing any of them as well as it could have, but it does present a particularly unpleasant variant on the whole sleeper ship concept. The idea is that the passengers are all kept in suspended animation except for the operational crew, who are awakened in shifts to make sure all is going as planned. Along the way, however, one guy goes space happy and decides he’s God, and before you know it descendants of the awakened crew members have evolved into monstrous cannibals, leaving the rest of the sleepers to occasionally be roused into a world where they’re basically spam on the hoof.
Disadvantages: I really have to lead with the negative, because holy crap is the Elysium a bad place to be. Even if you aren’t immediately eaten, you’re alone and in perpetual danger until/unless you find some other non-cannibal survivors. And even then, there’s a good chance they’re still going to try to kill you just on general principle. But on the upside, all that running from things that want to eat you has got to be a great cardio workout.
Advantages: I know, it doesn’t look like there would be any, but if you can manage to survive long enough to discover the Elysium’s great secret, there’s a slim chance you might get to help populate an alien world with this lady.
